The joys of walking are unmatched, and I’ve learnt this as I go for a walk every day. The benefits of walking everyday are so many that it is hard to overlook them.

Very few people really know about the benefits of walking or the joys of walking, and rarely do they enjoy it in the true sense, which hardly requires anything other than a positive mindset and attitude. I remember a beautiful quote at this point-

“Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

A major benefit of walking every day for me is to be able to connect with nature. I love to look around, be in the present, enjoy the nature, breathe in the fresh air, watch the flowers down the path, feel the moment, hear the chirping of the birds, and enjoy walking every day.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.  Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.  The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”  ~John Muir

I would like to mention the major benefits of walking for those who do wish to start and those who are already walking-

  • It’s good for your heart and helps reduce coronary heart diseases, stroke, and high cholesterol.
  • It lowers blood pressure, body fat, and controls body weight.
  • It cuts down on aches, pains, arthritis, back pains, and so many other ailments.
  • It helps you sleep better and increases your energy levels.
  • It reduces the risk of breast-cancer, colon cancer, and non-insulin dependent diabetes.
  • It’s good for the brain, bones, muscles, and overall health and fitness.
  • It’s a low-impact exercise, thus produces less stress on the knees and joints than other activities.
  • It increases mental well being, elevates your mood, helps overcome depression and anxiety, and releases tension.
  • It prolongs your life by nearly 2 minutes, and walking 20 minutes every day burns off 7 pounds of fat per year.

Let me share the place where I go for my walk with all of you, which is simply out of the world! Once I cross the roads across my house and walk a little distance, I come across a small, beautiful pathway leading right into the open fields.

There is a backdrop of lush green mountains and trees that reach the sky. The path meanders all around and between these fields, with pretty flowers by the side of the path, squirrels playing around, and birds gathering their meals, with the farmers off to their work early in the morning.

I always do get wonderful ideas for my posts and creative ideas for working, and this mostly happens when I walk, so I add that as one of my major benefits of walking!

“If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking.  Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.” ~Raymond Inmon

(It works for a woman too!!)

Walking is an enjoyable activity as I have come to realize, and it becomes more enjoyable if you have someone to walk along with you. Some people prefer walking alone, while many people like taking their dogs for a walk, whereas others like walking with their partners or friends. Either ways, walking is a wonderful activity, especially if you want to become best friends with your spouse !

Earlier I was walking every day, but was doing so alone- till the time my husband and I decided to walk together and stick to a routine. I need to thank him for making our walking schedule that involves me taking the lead early in the morning.

My husband, who prefers jogging to walking, takes his 15 minutes to jog and joins me walking on our way back home. That is one of the greatest benefits of walking for me, as I get to spend those lovely moments in nature with him. I have often told my husband who is my best walking friend, these lines-

“Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” ~ Albert Camus

Starting to walk everyday or starting a walking program takes initiative; though sticking with it takes commitment. But when you think about the health benefits of walking, it’s all worth your effort.

Health and fitness experts recommend walking daily up to a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes at least five days a week, which helps you lose and maintain overall weight and good health, as well as live longer and better. Start gradually and increase your walking time and speed by a few minutes each week.

To sum up things, remember that- “After a day’s walk everything has twice its usual value.”  ~George Macauley Trevelyan, thus with so many benefits of walking what moves you to get started?

With the festive holidays just round the corner, where Christmas is just knocking at our doorstep, aren’t you going to make a New Year Resolution for 2012 to walk every day?

Would you like to start walking or have you already made the move? Do you love walking every day? What have you experienced while you walk? Share in the comments below.

  1. Harleena,

Once again I jump around on your blog and find something useful and motivational! I’ve been walking a lot for the health benefits. It is such a simple way to stay in shape!

Several years ago I went on a retreat and we took a mindfulness walk. I found it very relaxing. It was not really for exercise physically, but more of a way to listen to my body and mind.

Lately, I have been shutting off my headphones and attempting to tune into my thoughts while walking.
Thank you for asking some thought provoking questions about walking. It IS a great time to think.

    xo Karen:)

    1. Hi Karen,

Ah…you are most welcome to visit any post on the blog anytime 🙂

Walking IS a great way to stay in shape and I think there’s a lot more to it than just that because you really DO enjoy what you are doing, besides being in nature and the fresh air, isn’t it?

Mindfulness walk sounds so wonderful! It must be stress-free and there’s nothing on your mind- relaxing indeed. I think walking is any day better than exercising as you are actually exercising yet not knowing you are doing it.

I do that too when I want to be one to one with nature, or just go deeper within or think on something. If not, then the headphones are good company and add that little extra to the walk. Yes indeed, the benefits of walking can’t really be overlooked and I hope people take on to this wonderful way to remain heatlhy.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experiences with us 🙂

  2. Nice article…the biggest benefit of walking for me is the low impact it has on my knees. I can go for a stroll without irritating my damaged knees. Slowing down to enjoy the view is nice too 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog Donald!

Glad you liked the post 🙂

I agree with you there, which makes walking any day better than jogging as that can hurt or have an adverse effect on your knees. Yes indeed, when you walk, you DO enjoy the view around you and it’s more fun that ways.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  3. Hi Harleena,

Its true the benefits of walking are huge. An if your walk turned about to be a morning walk, then I suppose its benefits are amazing. The freshness of air and the atmosphere in the morning is unmatched to the rest of the day. Also it fill you with a great energy to look forward you daily routine it great ease.

    1. Hi Jay,

It sure is, and morning walks have their own benefits – not to mention the fresh morning air and being in nature that adds to our health. Oh yes…you are totally energized to take up another new day.

Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the post 🙂

  4. Harleena, I think your choice of walking instead of jogging is wiser than your husband’s. Jogging, in the long run, has a negative impact on the joints of the knee. My father is 83 and he walks everyday. While I walk, too, I mostly focus on weight lifting. I want to build some more muscle…

    1. Hi Matthew,

Sorry for the late reply – I guess I missed out on this one, though I’m glad am here now 🙂

I agree with you there, though that mainly happens as you age or after 35-40 when the knee joints start giving problems. Earlier than that I think for youngsters it’s a great way to keep fit and lose weight. The benefits of walking everyday are well known, and for anyone older than 40-45, it is a much better option.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your views 🙂

  5. Really beneficial tips ..
I’m a big fan of your writing skills..I usually go for a walk in the evening time & it does refresh my mind like a power booster.. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this post & sharing your experience 😉

    1. Welcome to the blog Vivek!

Thanks for the kind words of appreciation. 🙂 Nice to know that you too enjoy your morning walks, and yes it does act as a power-booster for sure.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  6. Hi Harleena Singh,

I usually go for a walk in the evening when I feel tired sitting on a chair working for some hours all about blogging.. I really fresh after going for a walk and it does refresh my mind and I am ready to work again 🙂

Rest of the benefits you have written 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog, Dhruv!

Taking a break while working and going for a walk is a very healthy habit. It has multiple benefits and is surely refreshing and recharging.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience. 🙂

  7. I walk daily with my wife and I bought a tread mill to walk when it is to cold or slippery to walk out side.

Now I am recovering from a operation on my foot so only walk two miles a day but it helps me regain my balance. It is also great for loosing weight and exercising the dog. When I walk inside I listen to my Ipod and enjoy the music as well as the exercise. 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog Bruce!

Glad to know that you also enjoy walking, and going for a walk with your wife must be enjoyable as well. Tread mill is something I haven’t really tried as yet- guess it doesn’t really get that cold or slippery this end 🙂

Walking 2 miles even after a foot operation is a great deal! And of course, dogs love going out for walks and it sure is a wonderful way of exercising.

I also take my Ipod along and love listening to the music, though on the way back, as while going I prefer listening to the sounds of the birds chirping in the morning 🙂

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  8. Hey Harleen,

I so love this post! I come from a family where all of us believe in walking as being the best exercise. As a kid, my parents used to take us for long walks in town. Also, we used to walk to school but somehow moving to a bigger city lost all that!

Though the walking in now on the treadmill; if I do find time and the energy to go out in the heat (I live in a very hot place!) we do go for a walk!

    1. Glad you loved the post Hajra!

I myself also come from such a family as yours who strongly believe that walking is one of the best exercises for everyone. However, nowadays the kids really don’t prefer walking and would like to go to the gym or prefer other ways of exercising.

I remember our time also when we were taken for walks or we played various games in the open, but things do change when you are living in cities or working out indoors.

Ah..the heat does get to me as well, though during the summers I leave home very early and return much before sunrise. I haven’t really tried the treadmill yet, and don’t even want to think of that as an option. I guess would never let go of my morning walks and my quiet moment with nature:)

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  9. I also love walking for the connection to nature. I’m fortunate to live close to a really nice trail system that brings peace, quiet, and squirrels (unless I bring my puppy for the walk).

I’m always amazed at the lack of people out for a walk. On most days I can walk the whole trail system without seeing a soul. Everyone is my town is missing out!

    Kari

    1. Welcome to the blog Kari!

Nice to learn that you love walking as well, and yes, nature walking has its own freshness and charm. Your pup must be adorable and I can well imagine the squirrels running all over if your pup does come along with you!

Yes indeed, I wish people were more aware about the benefits of walking and how important walking or even any other form of exercise is for them. Hope they wake up!

      Thanks for stopping-by 🙂

  10. Leena, aloha. Because I am long time advocate of walking, this post strikes a responsive chord with me. Happily, I live in an area with beautiful weather and wonderful trails. Regular walks have been a part of my life for 20+/- years. In fact, I consider an hour walk a short walk and regularly walk 2-3 hours.

We live in a small community, only 5,000 people, and except for going to the farmers’ markets or into town an hour away, we walk every where. People wave and smile because they are so used to seeing us walking or, when meeting us, they will say “I know you: I see you walking all around town.” Since Jim and I are out walking most every day, we stop and pick up what groceries we need and bring them home with us; it is wonderful to enjoy the walks and the time with him.

If for whatever reason I need a break, I simply go outside and walk for 15 or 20 minutes.

Let’s get people moving, Leena. As you know, walking is one of the easiest ways to improve your health in most all areas.

    Until next time, aloha. Janet

    1. Aloha Janet!

Glad you could resonate with the post. Nice to know that you also love walking like most of us, and have been regularly doing so past so many years. And it is indeed wonderful to know that you walk as long as 2-3 hours!

I guess I am rather rushed for time with my kids and family, and even though at times I want to extend my time, I get time bound as I need to return in time for their school and other things.

I loved to hear about your small community with not very many people, as I think that makes the bond closer and people are easily able to connect with each other. It must be wonderful to walk all around and people waving back at you as they know you so well.

Nice to know that you too like me, love walking with your husband- and value the time spent with him as well. Yes, combining things like picking up the groceries while walking is a wonderful idea, besides so many things we can really share by talking while we walk. 🙂

I DO intend keep walking, whether for taking a break away from work (though that is a light stroll), or for its health benefits. I guess it keeps me more aware, alert, and feeling good about myself. 🙂

Thanks so much for adding more value to the post by sharing your experiences with everyone. Always a pleasure to have you over. 🙂

  11. Besides the health benefits, walking can also calm people. At least in my case. If something really bothers me or when I’m very angry, I take a walk – it calms me.

    1. Glad you could relate to the post Robert!

Yes indeed, walking does calm us and our nerves. It is the best get-away activity to soothe us and refresh us once again.

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  12. Hi Harleena,

I consider myself a runner but my dad IS a walker in all the expression.

One of those that look at everything and never walks a path without noticing every single detail of the surroundings.

The funny thing about my jogging is that when I’m normally aiming to be super healthy I’d run for something like 6 miles a day.

Whenever I feel like I don’t have the time or not feeling completely up for it, I’d stop the morning runs and then I get even more sick for not doing exercise.

The ‘funny’ bit comes in the fact that whenever I’m doing daily runs I NEVER feel bad, tired or sleepy; actually is all the opposite so my only understanding out of this, is that exercise makes you feel great, simple as that!

I guess I need to keep exercising even when I feel like not doing it.

    Sergio

PS. My dad has diabetes and since he understood that exercise is great for him in order to feel better, he hasn’t stopped going for his morning walks for quite a long time. I think that old man has plenty more energy than me! 😉

    1. Welcome to the blog Sergio!

Glad to know that you could resonate with the post. I guess your dad belongs to my category as he is fond of walking and observing his surroundings, besides enjoying his regular walks. It sure is recommended for those who have diabetes and other ailments. My dad is similar to yours, and besides his exercises, he does his share of walking by playing golf every single day!

I can understand why some people love to run and jog, as my husband belongs to the same category. But running for 6 miles is indeed quite an achievement!

Yes indeed, when we don’t walk or run on certain days, the feeling of sickness is common with me as well 🙂 I too prefer walking everyday as it keeps me happier, healthier, and feeling rejuvenated for the entire day as well.

Thanks for adding more value to the post and sharing your experiences with everyone. 🙂

      1. Hi Harleena,

I do love this subject- walking is so invigorating and soul enhancing. I remember as a young girl in New Zealand, (I grew up there) I would walk and walk for miles, to be with friends or just to be alone.

It was my escape from a sad childhood. Today it is for joy, health, and a clear mind. As you say one can enjoy nature all around them- the birds flit around me it almost seems they want to give me company.

I recently lost my husband to cancer, but before he died, and when he was well enough we would walk. But as the disease progressed it was to hard for him- I fell into a slump as I didn’t have a partner to share my walks with and I was then needed to be beside his bedside.

I developed a bad habit from having to drive and sit in hospital for long hours and then being too tired to walk. It has been 6 months since his passing and my first real holiday. My son and daughter in-law paid for me to come to their place in Perth and mind their cat while he and his wife could go to America for a Christmas holiday, and visit her folk for Christmas.

And for me, it has given me the opportunity to walk again. Especially as they live near the city and there are so many lovely walks near water (I love being near water) and parks and other wonderful sites. I can already feel the unwanted weight gain I had from so little previous activity of driving everywhere, dropping off. When I return home, I shall continue with my walking as I have broken through the, I don’t have time or inclination, barrier!

        Blessings,
        Brenda

        1. Welcome to the blog Brenda!

So sorry to hear about the loss of your husband, who must have been your everything and beside being your life partner, also your walk partner. It must have been really tough for you the past few months, though am glad you are learning to overcome the loss. I also lost my mother to cancer a few years back, so I can understand all the stages you must have undergone.

It must have been wonderful to walk with friends as a young girl, and I think that is where you must have got your walking habit from- as most of us pick up habits when we are young! However, as you mentioned it was mainly a get-away time for you- but must be nice to have that time away.

I can well imagine your routine where you would have to drive long hours, sit all day, and tirelessly look after your husband. That would surely have not left you with any time for walks. But am glad now that you are with your son and daughter-in-law, walking is back into your life.

I am sure now that you have started walking once again, you are going to enjoy it and loose the gained weight as well. I hope and pray that you recover from your loss, and being close to your near and dear ones is a great way to get over things ( though once they are back ).

Thanks for stopping-by and sharing your experiences with everyone. 🙂

  13. I am a life-long confirmed walker – now a city-dweller without a car in a part of town with not the best public transportation. Walking is now not just exercise and recreation, but part of my daily commute. On top of that, I walk during my 30-minute lunch break no matter how bad the weather – and always return to my desk feeling much happier – and I am not walking in a lovely park – but in an industrial area flanking a busy railroad switching yard!

I never plan or schedule walks. They just happen. I never worry about calories either. The only downside is that I wear out shoes (and even socks!) really quickly.

    1. Welcome to the blog Suzanne!

Nice to learn more about you and your walking schedule, you sure sound determined and a regular with walking. I can imagine the amount of walking you must be doing all day long, which keeps you happy and energetic all day long!

I guess whether we are walking in the nature or in areas as you mentioned- a busy railroad switching yard- as long as you are walking, you remain healthier and happier. And, shoes and socks can always be bought- health cannot!

Thanks for stopping-by and sharing your experiences with everyone 🙂

  14. Hey Harleena,

I love walking – it does wonders for the mind, and it opens up awareness. I’v had a little bit of a injury so I’ve not been able to walk as much as I would like to, but I think I’m going to give it a little extra push! This reminds me that walking has many benefits and it pays off to invest a little time to do it – thanks for the reminder 🙂

    Blessings

    1. Welcome to the blog Lloyd!

Glad to know that you too are among so many of us who love walking! Yes indeed, it is a great energizer and makes you more alert and aware. I also had a break from walking for a few months due to my injury after an accident sometime back, but now I am back on road. But yes, I had to give myself that much required push once I restarted!

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  15. Hi Harleena,

I wish I had time to go walking everyday, I used to when I had more free time, but now I barely sleep enough to wake up early before work, then I get home when it is too dark to go walking.

I guess I could sacrifice weekends to go walking – I definitely should find time to do it, especially after reading all the benefits you provided. 🙂
Thanks for this – it reminded me I should find more time for myself.

Here in South Africa the nature is beautiful, however, crime is a major problem when going for walks.

    Have a good day.
    Rochelle.

    1. Yes indeed Rochelle- we do need to find the time for ourselves, and walking is one great activity to take up!

I can understand the lack of time if you are working that late at night and have to start work early in the morning. Guess weekends would work best for you then, unless you are already walking around at your work place, as that also does serve the purpose, though its not an intentional walk.

South Africa is sure a wonderful place where nature is concerned, but sad to learn about the crime going about. May be you should choose some time during the daytime for walking, if you find the time!

Thanks so much for stopping-by. 🙂

  16. I love walking and it gives me a great feeling when I do so. Whenever I feel bored doing my routine I just take a 30 minutes break to walk. I love doing it, listen to music, and chating with my friends through blackberry at the same time lool^^

    Thanks for sharing Harleena.

    1. Glad to learn that you too love to walk Faissal!

Yes indeed, walking does soar your spirits and is surely an activity that you can take up anytime of the day. I also often take a stroll on the road outside our house when I need a short break or when I am bored, and it does refresh me!

Ah yes, music and friends while walking is another way of enjoying your walk, as they sure do keep you good company!

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  17. Hi Harleena! 🙂

I really enjoyed this post, and not because I walk on a regular basis (because I don’t); rather because you shared great tips and a piece of your life with us. It really is great getting to know other bloggers better.

I simply haven’t had the opportunity to walk as much as I would like to though. I think it’s partly because I start my day so early, and then my day is usually filled with things that need to be done, like on yesterday. That’s certainly not an excuse, because everyone else has something to do as well; and if I really wanted to do so, I could certainly make the time.

My partner and I usually walk together in the warmer months, but since daylights savings brings the darkness earlier, and he usually doesn’t get home until much later; I tend to lose interest fairly quicker than I would have usually. The winter months and the brisk cool morning and evenings here in Georgia, don’t help in the motivation department at all either. 😀

However, after reading your post here today, I think it’s definitely worth taking into consideration. I need to get back into working out and running on a regular basis; if for nothing else but to be around longer in this life to enjoy the things and people that mean the world to me.

Thank you so much for sharing this incredibly insightful post. Tomorrow would be a most excellent day to start, huh? I’ll be sure to tell you in the morning how it all worked out. 😉

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post Deeone!

I can understand how most of us walk while others find it hard to find the time to do so, having experiences both the things in my life. There was a time when I had several excuses lined up not to go for my walks, while at other times it was just that I did not feel like, or the weather was not right. However, once we want something, we go for it and get it! Right!

This is exactly what I have been doing ever since. Come rain, summer, winter, or any season for that matter- it is a must that I walk. I have to give myself that push at times, but once I am out of the door, there is no looking back. In-fact the days I don’t walk, it feels rather sick or an empty- ill feeling that I have not achieved something today.

Yes indeed, we all have tasks to complete and things to do- yet I think we all do need to take out some time for activity or any other form of exercise. We may not realize it now as we are young, but as we begin aging, we understand the reasons behind it. Winters are in-fact a wonderful time for walks, and it does not have to be done in the mornings if you are busy, as you can go for a walk in the sun and get the required vitamin D for the day as well 🙂

I guess you will surely be able to concentrate and focus better, beside feeling much better. Hope the post motivated you enough to start walking/running/exercising – as I would love to hear if you really did begin the next day.

Thanks for adding more value to the post and stopping-by. 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog Sunshine!

Glad these lines made you smile, as walking does prolong your life by nearly 2 minutes as per recent studies.

Thanks for stopping-by, do visit the blog for more stuff. 🙂

  18. After this list of benefits I can’t find an excuse not to walk on a daily basis
    Thanks Harleena 🙂

    1. Glad you liked the post Farouk!

It sure would do you good if you start walking, as you only get better mentally and physically if you walk (speaking out of experience)!

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  19. Hi Harleena,

Walking is such a great and low impact exercise for keeping us in shape and healthy. The cool thing is that most anybody can walk regardless of their age or physical limitations. Walking is absolutely a great way to clear out the mind as well.

    1. Glad you could relate to the post Justin!

Yes indeed, walking is a wonderful exercise to keep you in shape, good for your overall health, clears your mind, uplifts you soul, and anyone can start walking at any age. I guess even those with physical limitations, unless they are not that serious, are able to walk. And in most cases like arthritis or those people who have knee problems, are recommended to walk daily. The joys of walking are truly boundless.

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  20. A walk every day, keep the doctor away. I agree with all the points you mention. There is one extra one: walking empties your mind and makes room for creative thoughts. I also cycle a lot. After a 2500 km cycling trip, I did not loose any weight.

    1. Welcome to the blog Mivvy!

Glad you could resonate with the post, and yes, walking does make your mind lighter and gives room to more creative thoughts. Nice to learn that you cycle, and cycling 2500 km is sure a great achievement! May be you did not lose weight as you were cycling leisurely and not in the true sense of trying to lose weight. I guess walking or running are ideal for that.

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  21. Harleena, you inspired me!

I saw the title of your post and left on an hour walk through our beautiful area. You should post a picture of the scene where you walk! We would all love to share that with you.

Where I used to live in England, there were beautiful woods across the street. I loved walking a few minutes and being surrounded by nature. There’s something very peaceful about not being able to see anything man-made around you.

The bad part was that half the year I couldn’t walk in the woods because it was too muddy. It just wasn’t possible to get through the bog during rainy season.

Now that I’m back in the US, I walk along the road through the woods. It’s truly beautiful and inspiring. Unlike England, it’s a tremendous workout just walking because of the big hills.

Thank you so much, Harleena, for being a source of inspiration!

    1. Glad you found the post inspirational Carolyn!

Am so happy that you felt motivated to walk, and did leave for a walk as well! Hope it refreshed you! Yes, I did want to put up a picture of the scene where I walk but the weather is cloudy for the past few days when I leave for my walk, thus the pictures are not coming up too well.

I can just about imagine you walking in the woods as well, though the rains do stop us from venturing far. And yes, you are so right about something very peaceful about not being able to see anything man-made around you. It’s just us walking and the nature. What bliss!

I guess walking along the road through the woods with the hills around is wonderful as well, anything that keeps you connected with nature works! You sure did inspire everyone reading the post to start walking!!

Thanks so much for adding value to the post by sharing your own experiences with everyone. It is always wonderful to have you over. 🙂

  22. This is my first visit here. I found so many entertaining stuff on your blog, especially its discussion.
From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment here!
    Keep up the good work.

    1. Welcome to the blog Michael!

Glad you found the blog entertaining and could relate to the posts. Yes indeed, there is a wonderful amount of discussion going on about the benefits of walking everyday, and I think most people do love to walk as well.

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  23. Hi Harleena,

I have long loved a quote you featured in this post:

“If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.” ~Raymond Inmon

I love walking because this is indeed when my Spiritual guides are at their most vocal. I have solved many challenges, clarified countless dilemmas, and received endless intuitive messages on my daily walks.

I love walking because for me it is a meditative experience which I can practise being totally present in whatever environment I find myself. Being connected to the aliveness within while walking along a busy street is as exhilarating as walking along a quite country lane.

What I have found beneficial, Harleena, is to keep a tiny pad and pencil in my pocket as I walk. I am not sure what it is like for others but sometimes I receive creative ideas in a continual stream. Unless I jot down some keywords, I can get to the end of my walk and find there was so much given that I can’t recall all of it.

Thank you for writing about an important topic that means a great deal to me.

    ~Marcus

    1. That quote is one of my favorites too Marcus!

I get most of my creative ideas when I walk, things like new posts for the blog, keywords that may best suite a topic, how to plan the day ahead and so many other things. I like your idea of carrying a tiny note pad and pencil in the pocket to jot down anything that comes to mind- must try it out!

Yes indeed, walking sure is a spiritual and meditative experience as we are able to connect one-to-one with nature and ourselves. I like what you mentioned that – walking along a busy street is as exhilarating as walking along a quite country lane. ( I still have to experience walking along a busy street and for that I would have to go right into the city area, which is rather far from our house!)

I guess as long as you walk, no matter the place, no matter alone or with company- you are alive and doing yourself good, mentally, physically, and overall health-wise.

Thanks so much for adding more value to the post by sharing your experiences with everyone. It is always nice to have you over. 🙂

  24. Harleena, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the quotes that you have used. They are so lovely.

I don’t walk enough, I’m afraid. I’m a very physically active person, but not particularly connected to ‘nature’. It’s a part of myself I would like to cultivate, but with winter upon us (and I’m in Canada!), it might have to wait until Spring :-).

    1. Glad you liked the quotes Ruth!

I am another one who just loves quotes and none of my posts are complete without at least one of them! I can understand what you mean by saying that you are active enough otherwise, though not connected much with nature or walking. I guess your adorable kids must be keeping you on your toes all day long, which in itself is exercise enough!

It would surely be nice if you can spare a few minutes for walking as soon as spring sets in. Am sure you would love it and feel the difference it brings about in your life.

Thanks so much for stopping-by. 🙂

  25. Hi Harleena,

I walk for at least one hour every single day. I just love walking. I don’t do it for the health benefits, but mostly to relax and enjoy nature. Walking everyday helps me stay creative 🙂

    1. That sure is wonderful Jens!

I did read about your walking in the nature in one of your posts, and knew you were fond of this activity. Yes indeed, when you enjoy walking for the joy it gives you and for relaxation purposes, you automatically feel healthy and good. Happens with me at least! And yes, creative juices flow with every step taken!!

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  26. Just a quick one to let you know that I have nominated as one of my sunshine bloggers.

Thanks for the post here that inspire is to walk. Personally, I prefer to run. But sometimes, hiking and walking is a great way to relax.

    Cheers

    1. Wow! That sure is a double treat for me Jimmy- as I just received one from Samantha- thanks ever so much for your kindness!

I do know a lot of people who prefer running as it is quicker and more energizing for them, which includes my husband as well. Yes indeed, hiking sure is another wonderful activity, something we used to do a lot during out college days. I guess anything connected with nature works for me!

Thanks so much for stopping-by. 🙂

  27. I try hard to find time to walk and or lift weights on a regular basis because it just makes me feel a thousand times better.

    1. Nice to know that you do enjoy walking and lifting weights Jack!

I know my dad uses a similar combination and loves his golf as well. Great things to keep you fit, active, and ever so healthy. Yes indeed, such activities do make us feel better for the rest of the day and are a great way to start the day.

      Thanks for stopping-by. 🙂

  28. Hi Harleena,

As a young person who has agile legs, I would suggest running. It’s also good for your health and you do have the pleasure to reflect and think. However, running adds one other effect – it pushes you in a very aggressive manner. I feel if I can push myself to run more miles – the further and faster I go – that once I get to my goal – I can accomplish anything! (: <3

    1. Welcome to the blog Jonathan!

I totally agree with you that running or jogging works well with young people, and those who are agile and fit. It is something my husband does, and he prefer jogging to walking for the very same reasons as you mentioned above. For me walks turn out best, as I love to spend some quiet moments with nature, be in the peaceful surroundings, and get creative ideas for the day!

Thanks so much for stopping-by. 🙂

  29. Hi Harleena,

I totally agree with you on just how good walking is for you. I started walking on a regular basis a few years ago. I walk at least 30 minutes a day each day, sometimes a little more, weather permitting.

Unfortunately, I live in the city so I don’t have any nature walks around me. I could get in the car and drive to Memorial Park but I love walking with my dog and she would go nuts with all the activity on those walking trails so that won’t work for me.

We try to not walk the same way everyday, change it up some but still the walk itself, seeing the same things all the time get boring. But that’s okay, it’s good for you, it does us both good to take a break and just get outside. Kayla loves exploring even if she’s explored those areas before.

I will also add that my Dad prolonged his life by many years due to his walking. The doctor’s have even claimed that’s what kept him around a lot longer, walking every single day. When the weather was bad, he and my Mom would go to the mall and walk. But they did this religiously every single day and he definitely had more health problems then most people. But, he lived to be 80 years old so that in itself is a huge accomplishment.

Enjoyed this post and hope it gets more people to moving.

    Have a beautiful weekend.

    ~Adrienne

    1. Glad you could resonate with the post Adrienne!

Yes indeed, 30 minutes of brisk walk on a regular basis is supposed to do wonders for your health as per experts, and this is exactly what I practice as well. However, my walks extend up to 45 minutes as I am trying to lose some weight!

I can understand about the problems of the city where walking areas are concerned, or unless you drive to a nearby area for walking- but Kayla may not like that. I used to take my dog, Snoopy along with me earlier, but then I was not really walking fast enough, as he wanted to walk leisurely at times and snoop around a little between his walks. So, now its his share of 15 minutes of stroll time first thing in the morning, and later my brisk health walk.

You are so right there, the same paths make the walk boring. We also change our path though not that often, as we have 2-3 smaller pathways that lead back home. It is always nicer to see more areas around and enjoy the natural surroundings.

I did read about your dad in the wonderful tribute post you wrote about him, and marveled at all that he had accomplished during his life. It surely was his determination to walk daily, even during the rough weather that pulled him through. The mall sure is a wonderful idea to get through with your activity for the day!

Thanks so much for sparing the time to stop-by and sharing your experiences with everyone. Have a wonderful weekend as well 🙂

  30. I used to be better at this. When I was at school I used to walk several miles just to get to all my classes, the parking lot, and back.

I certainly felt the difference when I was walking vs not walking. I’ll have to pick up some more walking now that temperatures are more bearable in Arizona now.

    Thanks,

    Bryce

    1. Happens to the best of us Bryce!

I used to be very regular during my college days and before I got married, but things took a backseat when the kids came along and family commitments. But it was only after making a deliberate effort and being determined that I have been regular with my walks now for a long time.

Yes indeed, I think there is a surge of all positive energies flowing all through the body when we walk, something that I experiences, as compared to days when I can’t go for my walk due to various reasons. It sure is a wonderful activity to take up any time of the year.

Thanks for stopping-by and sharing your experiences with everyone. Always a pleasure to have you over. 🙂
