Don’t we all often think about finding easy ways to achieve wellness? In the desperate need to acquire wellness, we often fall prey to shortcuts.

You may find many wellness commercial products that offer easy solutions and make too-good-to-be-true promises, but you do not always need medicines to help you achieve wellness.

In fact, to achieve health and wellness is not tough, and all that’s needed is for you to give it some serious thought. An in-depth understanding of wellness will help us realize that it depends a great deal on our lifestyle, our state of mind, and the choices that we make.

“The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.” ~ Euripides

Meaning of Health & Wellness

The terms health and wellness differ in meaning. Wellness is the pursuit of good overall mental, physical, and emotional health that involves the conscious decision on the part of the individual.

On the other hand, health simply denotes a state of fitness or the person’s condition- whether it has abundance or lack of certain aspects, exhibits abnormality, or harbors diseases etc.

We are going to pursue wellness as our overall or comprehensive health, which takes into account everything ranging from our subtlest mental aspects to the gross physical factors.

How Can You Achieve Wellness?

You can achieve wellness, by staying in good condition mentally, physically, spiritually, and by revitalizing your whole being that consists of the- body, mind and spirit.

Wellness is no separate entity- it’s an aggregate of our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

“The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually.” ~ Greg Anderson

Let me begin by asking you a few questions- Are you tired of feeling drained? Do you feel you are losing your health, vitality, and the spark you once had, and want it back? Do you wish you were healthier but don’t know where to begin?

In brief- if you have such questions in your mind and want to achieve wellness but don’t know how to achieve it, then this post would definitely help you.

Most of us want more energy, greater vitality, health and wellness, but due to our hectic schedules and busy professions, these objectives are compromised and take a back seat.

So, here’s a reminder to all the entrepreneurs and professionals alike: if you increase your wellness quotient, you definitely increase your creativity, quality, and productivity, and thus have a greater chance of achieving success in whatever you do!

I have had the opportunity to study wellness in detail, and came to know that wellness is in reality a combination of many dimensions of our life.

Once the various dimensions of wellness are met, you are considered whole or complete, and when you’re complete, then you’re happy with yourself, and in turn with others. When we are at peace with ourselves, happiness flows in and out, enabling us to exude our best.

Here’s your chance to know more about the wellness dimensions and to try out the suggested ways to achieve wellness, which I am sure, will transform your body, mind, and soul.

Dimensions of Wellness

Mentioned below are the eight dimensions of wellness that really affect the way you feel about yourself.

1- Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness is the ability to handle your emotions in a constructive and positive manner, to maintain them in a healthy state and cope with the challenges life can bring about.

It’s all about how well you cope with stress, anger, fear, sadness; how you manage your behavior and feelings; how well you are able to express your self-confidence, love, joy, and happiness. These are all key elements to build your emotional well being.

People who are emotionally well have the ability to express their feelings and manage their feelings effectively. They are well aware, and accept a variety of feelings in themselves and in others.

By doing so, they cultivate wellness in themselves. Develop your emotional aspect, and the skill of managing it.

2- Environmental Wellness

Environmental wellness is an appreciation for the external environment, and the role a person play’s in improving, and preserving environmental conditions.

As an environmentally-friendly person, you can try and conserve energy, treasure earth’s natural resources, buy organic food and products, use recycled thing, and appreciate what nature offers them.

Improve environmental wellness by making your environment and home cleaner. How does this help you? Well, you end up making your house a safer place for you and your family to live in, and you feel good about it!

3- Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual wellness is about learning and keeping the mind engaged in stimulating activities, and the ability to engage in clear thinking and recall.

You need to have an active mind that’s receptive to new ideas, seeks new challenges, is able to think and analyze critically, is creative, curious, and remains motivated.

To achieve intellectual wellness, you need to develop hobbies and interests that include reading, learning new languages, problem solving or solving puzzles, creating art, and many such others, which are all activities supporting brain development.

People who are intellectually well will challenge and stretch their minds with creative and intelligent pursuits, instead of becoming self-satisfied and unproductive.

4- Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to lead a day, free from physical stress or fatigue.

Physical wellness is all about being at your physical best, and it enables you to live a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life.

This kind of wellness is developed by eating the right kind of food, getting enough sleep, and practicing healthy exercise habits.

You need to eat a nutritious diet that’s rich in minerals and vitamins, good in fats, with lean protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber.

To benefit your heart and improve or maintain your health, try cardio exercises 3-4 times a week. Also, don’t forget to take relaxation breaks to de-stress and relax daily.

Recognizing that your behavior has a significant impact on your wellness and adopting healthful eating habits like a balanced diet, routine checkups, exercise, and avoiding destructive habits like drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, will lead you to optimal physical wellness.

Physical wellness also involves knowing how to take care of minor illnesses, requirement to seek medical attention, and developing the personal responsibility for your own health.

Physically well people appreciate and understand the relationships between sound nutrition and how their body performs. The feeling of looking and feeling good often leads to an enhanced feeling of self-control, self-esteem, determination, and a sense of direction.

5- Occupational Wellness

Occupational wellness is the ability to attain personal fulfillment from our chosen career fields or jobs, while maintaining a balance in our lives.

Such wellness is related to our attitude about our work, and our personal satisfaction and enrichment in our life through work.

Important components of occupational wellness are the choice of profession, career ambition, job satisfaction, and personal performance.

Your desire to contribute in your career to make a positive impact on the organization you work in and to the society as a whole, leads to occupational wellness.

To achieve occupational wellness, you need to do exactly what you want to do in life, and you need to be comfortable with your future plans as well.

6- Social Wellness

Social wellness is your contribution to the community, and how you cultivate and build better living spaces and social networks. Such kind of wellness is about enjoying work and leisure activities that involves interaction with others.

Social wellness is the ability to connect and relate to one another in our world, to establish and maintain positive relationships with our family, friends, and co-workers.

Of course, social networking options like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ among others do help create extensive social networks and cultivate social wellness. However, the importance of live social interactions cannot be ruled out.

People with social wellness are able to better relate to others, and are able to build nurturing relationships that foster love through trust.

They have satisfying relationships and support groups, participate and contribute to the community, pick up good communication skills, and establish social closeness and intimacy.

7- Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives. This wellness occurs when our beliefs and values are aligned with our actions, and we can live in a state of harmony with the outer world while balancing our inner needs.

Such wellness is all about exploring about who you are as a spiritual being, of looking within and identifying your core inner beliefs that make you unique. Your spirituality is defined by your faith (in religion), beliefs, values, principles, and morals.

People with such wellness may experience a variety of feelings. Some days you may be filled with joy and excitement, while at other days you may feel lost, doubtful, or afraid. However, these are normal feelings to the expansion to your spiritual self, or can be called spiritual growing pains.

You enjoy spiritual wellness and health when you develop the inner quality of being compassionate, loving, forgiving and joyful. Spiritual wellness or spiritual health is promoted through activities like self-exploration, energy clearing, and mediation.

People seeking spiritual wellness take out time from their daily routines for spiritual growth and learning. They have a clear sense of right and wrong, and act accordingly.

8- Financial Wellness

Financial wellness is the ability to secure your financial future by getting or staying out of debt. There’s no doubt that most of us continuously aspire to develop this form of wellness.

You can achieve such kind of wellness by having a plan B ready, making a habit of saving money for a rainy day or your retirement, earning extra money to keep aside to secure your financial health, if something bad happens.

It is indeed difficult to say that we can do well in all the above mentioned dimensions of wellness. Speaking of myself, I still need to work upon certain aspects of financial and environmental wellness, while I am trying hard for getting closer to spiritual wellness for my inner growth!

Wellness for me is all about the healthy balance of the body, mind, and spirit, which has an impact on my overall personality. Wellness is precious and clearly determinates the feel-good factor of our life.

Leaving out a few wellness dimensions won’t steal the happiness out of your lives, but striving for complete wellness will keep that special smile always on your face. It will equip you well and give you peace of mind, wherever you are.

“Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.” ~ Mary Anne Radmacher

  1. Harleena,

This is a very good analysis of the different aspects of Wellness. Here is what T. Harv Ecker (author, businessman and motivational teacher known for his courses on wealth and motivation) says: Financial, Occupational, and Physical Wellness depend on Spiritual and Emotional Wellness to a great extend. He uses the parallel of a tree and its roots. The roots are your Spiritual and Emotional world. The part of the tree that is above the ground (your finances, environment, job, etc) is only a manifestation of what is going in your “underground” world.

  2. I think these wellness’s are interlinks and dependent on one another. Foundation for these is to have positive thinking that is the fountain of happiness and consistent progress.

    1. You are quite right Azam!

Most of these areas of wellness are dependent on one another, though achieving all of them is not that easy. You surely do need to have a positive mind set for doing anything.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  3. Harleena,

This post says it all. In the U.S.A today it is so difficult to find balance and therefore, achieve wellness. When I was a high school teacher teaching web design, I was definitely NOT achieving balance. I had to wake up everyday at 5:45 AM which is way too early for me since I cannot fall asleep before midnight. The job was unfulfilling and stressful and I wasn’t exercising properly. Now I work from home, wake up when I want, doing what I love, meditate every morning, ride my bicycle almost everyday and am feeling fulfilled. When I start to work more and exercise and / or meditate less, the imbalance soon affects my work. I also have a spiritual belief system that helps keep me in balance, as well. As you so clearly state, we must really strive to do our best in all these areas including environment and food and finance, in order to lead a happy, healthy, balanced life full of health and wellness. There really is no quick fix and that’s what most people want nowadays — a quick fix with little effort involved!

Thanks so much for this great post!

    1. Welcome to the blog Jupiter!

Glad you could resonate with the post. Yes indeed, achieving wellness is also related a great deal to our state of mind or our overall wellness. Just as you experienced a drastic change when you switched from your full time job where you were not able to devote time for doing things that made you feel well and happy- to a work at home job where you are now able to spend that time on yourself. I am sure the difference must be making you feel good and lead a life you always wanted to.

I was in a similar situation when I was working at as a full time teacher as well, though I had to leave as I wanted to devote more time to my kids and family, and work from home to have my own time. And I am glad i switched over and can manage to take out time for doing all those things that earlier were not possible.

You are absolutely right about imbalance that we may feel if we suddenly do things out of the normal routine we are used to. I guess our bodies get used to a certain way of functioning within our comfort zones that we create, and anything outside of that does create a imbalance that we don’t really like or want.

There are no quick-fix solutions to achieving overall wellness, no matter how hard you may try! And each one of us have to chalk out our own wellness level and keep trying to get better at the ones that need attention as well. The path is simple if you are ready for taking it up- isn’t it?

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experiences with everyone. 🙂

  4. I fully agree with you!

Whatever we decide to do, we must do it with full conviction and give our best – keeping full focus on ‘Goal’ but not on ‘Result’ and we must take ‘Risks’ also. ‘If we win, we can lead others; if we loose, we can guide others’. Let’s keep the old saying in mind… “No risk, No gain”.

    With due regards,
    Mehrotra

    1. Thanks for taking part in the discussion and contributing your valuable thoughts. I’m sure everyone would benefit from the outcome of this post.

  5. In my personal view, no human being on this earth can completely remove all sorts of ‘Negativity’ from our life, otherwise there won’t be any difference between a Human Being and GOD. Our efforts should be for restricting them so as not to effect others negatively. and at the same time we should focus on improving upon our positive points.

Personally I feel that if you have a positive outlook, it is more than enough to make you feel good , to keep you motivated and inspired, to help you find a ray of hope under the worst adversity of all kinds.

    Regards,
    Mehrotra

    1. Thanks for the clarification Rajendranath!

However, I believe we should always make our 100% efforts and accept whatever results we get, and keep trying for the best. You’ve made some good points about how to improve ourselves, and being positive is one of the dire essentials.

Thanks for adding to the conversation 🙂

  6. Hi Harleena,

It’s so true, when we have wellness in these areas we have balance in our lives. Then we can focus on other matters that are enjoyable and important. So often when people are suffering it’s because these areas of their lives are out of balance and they aren’t enjoying wellness as they should. They don’t understand that health is important and that all of these dimensions need attention.

As Janet said, Magnificent Post, Harleena!

    1. Glad you could resonate with the post Carolyn!

You are so right there- when we try and cover these various dimensions of wellness, we have balance in our lives. This does help us lead a much better, happier, and content life.

People suffer and carry on with a painful journey of life as they don’t realize the importance of covering these areas of wellness, which come forth only when you read or learn more about them. Our life does revolve around these dimensions of wellness, though we really don’t come to know about it.

Thanks so much for your words of appreciation- it sure is a pleasure to have you over Carolyn 🙂

  7. I still believe that wellness feeling is related to only ‘Mental and Physical’ faculties.
Social, Financial, Occupational, Environmental and Spiritual wellness are all part of mental wellness (Attitude as I had written before).

As Manish commented,”we should do the things that we like most” – is again nothing but our “Aptitude”.

Talking about Intellectual field, I would say that there are two kinds of “Intelligences”:
    1. Genetic (which is not in our hands and can’t be changed/ improved).
    2. Second is “Emotional” referred to as “EQ”, which is under our control but depends on our “Aptitude, Attitude, and their degrees.”

Sub classifications of “Mental Wellness” are variables dependent again on Individual’s “Aptitude & Attitude”, internal and external factors, time and situation, conditions etc. These variables keep changing according to changes in ‘Attitude’, social, financial, and other variable conditions.

‘Ego’, ‘Argumentative habits’, and improper ‘Communicative skills’ contribute NEGATIVELY to the feelings of “Wellness”.

    1. Thanks for the elaborate explanation on factors that affect the ‘total wellness’ of an individual. It is obvious that if we attain mental and physical wellness, the remaining aspects of wellness too would follow. Yes, we can change and control only the factors that are in our hands, and the key to achieveing wellness does lay in removing all sorts of negativities in us.

Thanks again for the contribution to the post.

  8. Harleena, aloha.

Thanks so much for this magnificent post which so resonates with me. Wellness has been an active pursuit of mine for decades. While I had never seen it broken down into these 8 components, I certainly agree with them and will use them.

Because I believe all areas of your life are better if you enjoy physical wellness, I engage in habits that foster increasing improvements in that area.

Recognizing that emotional wellness impacts my world in virtually all areas, I have worked on this area extensively through personal development–and by developing patience and detachment.

Harleena, I strive for balance in all areas while accepting that life is a teeter toter so it is not likely one will ever see everything lined up perfectly at one time. In fact, since we are all growing and evolving, it makes sense that each area would be at different levels at any given time.

Love, love, love these 8 components of wellness. Thanks so much for another brilliant post.

Wishing you all the best. Aloha. Janet

    1. Aloha Janet!

Glad to hear that the post resonated with you, and I know wellness has been an active pursuit of yours 🙂

I felt these dimensions of wellness covered up most of the aspects of wellness, though overall wellness means a lot more than meets the eye. Yes indeed, physical wellness is a major area that covers up most of the other wellness also and is good for our overall wellness. (Like me, I know you too love your walks that keep you fit 🙂

Emotional wellness is a vast area and covers up many smaller aspects to it, and those who can achieve this are doing wonders for the development of their inner self. Nice to know that you could relate so well to it, and patience and detachment are something that you have learnt along the way. However, I wonder how does detachment really help? Does it mean to be cut off from people or detaching yourself from worries and other things that may affect you?

You are quite right about the need to work on all the areas of wellness, and not just one or two of them. And what matters most is that we keep trying to achieve as many as we can that help us become better and well.

Happy to hear that you loved these dimensions of wellness Janet. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and adding more value to the post. It’s always a pleasure to have you over 🙂

  9. Spot on post Harleena!

The Euripedes quote sums it up. Realize the Power in, and around you, life becomes, well, whatever you decide to make of it. This is wellness, realizing the omnipresent power we can tap into each moment.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Ryan

    1. Welcome to the blog Ryan!

Wonderful to have you over! Glad you could resonate with the post and liked the quote- something I must include in all my posts 🙂

I like your thought about wellness, which is so true- realizing the omnipresent power in each moment….or kind of attracting positivism- something like the Law of Attraction. But yes, not everyone can achieve overall wellness, and it sure needs to be worked on!

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  10. Hi Harleena,

This was an amazing post explaining the different types of wellness and how to achieve them.

I certainly have been trying to expand my intellectual wellness and have recently followed by dad’s lead and taken an interest in Sudoko. I’ve also made progress in the area of spiritual wellness in recent years.

Your post made me think of the particular types of wellness that I could do some work on. In particular, I could improve on financial wellness and have been looking at how I can really get my coaching practice going as a plan B to my day job.

    1. Sorry for the late reply Hiten!

I thought I had replied, guess I missed it 🙂

Ah…playing Sudoko will surely increase your intellectual wellness- guess you should do that often! I somehow never managed to get it right, no matter how many times I tried!

Glad the post gave you a reason to think more about the dimensions of wellness. Financial wellness is something that I too am learning, though quite late in life. Guess never really gave it much thought earlier.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  11. Hi Harleena,

That’s a very good post that will have people seeing and recognising the difference between health and wellness.

When i had my injury I went backwards quickly in both areas and although i started to get fit again I still had a long journey back to wellness. I started getting there then had a fall from my chair and broke my leg which resulted in me being housebound for 2 years.

It was during that 2 years that i started working online to try and better my situation. Fast forward five years and my wellness has improved but my health still needs working on.

I have just started back with my old basketball team and that’s helping with my fitness, which in turn will help my health and my wellness, I hope 😉

    Thanks Harleena,
    Barry

    1. Welcome to the blog Barry- so nice to have you over!

Glad you could resonate with the post and liked it as well 🙂

Must have been rather tough for you to undergo so much of pain and the worst being, when you have no other option than to remain housebound for such a long period of time.

Yes indeed, injuries or ailments do leave us rather weak and not in a condition to carry on with any health or fitness activities. And even though we may get alright with time, the overall wellness comes gradually and takes it’s own due course.

But yes, seeing the brighter side of things- as it’s said when God takes away something he gives you so much more in place. Guess, that’s why your blog is doing wonders now 🙂

Fitness is mainly a state of mind and if you have the will, you can really work on it! Nice to know that you are already playing basketball, and am sure it must be making you feel so much better. Health & wellness are sure to follow!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your experience with everyone. 🙂

  12. Hi Harleena,

Great insight about wellness. I don’t think that you’ve forgotten anything!

It’s true that health and wellness are often put together, but while some people my be healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that they are well in the sense that you mentioned in your post. Health and wellness while going well together can also be separate. One may have one and not the other.

Thanks for sharing this great post 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog Sylviane!

Glad you liked the post, and hope I haven’t forgotten anything as well!

Yes indeed, health and wellness are often termed or used together, though both have their own aspects and vast meanings, if we look into the finer details of things. I think wellness is a much broader term and comprises of health and other things, which can be broken down still further into various dimensions.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  13. Yet another awesome post by you Harleena!!!

You have done a great job at explaining all those various types of wellnesses and the quotes add more meaning to the article. Very nicely done.

I would give a second thought on my intellectual and emotional wellnesses, those are 2 important areas of improvement which I can really see as of now. Both of them will affect how i lead my life at work and at home and those are what I really care about.

Hope you achieve wellness in all those and God Bless You.

    1. Glad you liked the post Praveen!

Yes indeed, I did try putting up all the various dimensions of wellness, as they do cover up everything. And quotes are something I feel the post really looks empty without, so make sure to add in a few related to the topic of course!

I am sure if you work on the Intellectual and Emotional wellness, you would do wonders in them, if those are the only two requiring attention. Yes indeed, your work and family are both connected with both these aspects of wellness, and would soon be noticed whenever you make the attempts.

I also still trying my best to work in the areas that need attention, though things do take time – but I am in no rush, one thing at a time works best for me!

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  14. Wonderful Post!

I really appreciated that you addressed all these areas of “wellness” as I believe they are all intertwined, with some being stronger..spiritual, physical, emotional and the others fill in the spaces to make us the best we can be. That’s not to say having all going smoothly, like a fine-tuned engine, is an easy task. Life throws us curve balls..or I should say sand in the tank, and we can choke. I know that so well myself.

You presented ‘wellness” areas that aren’t normally thought of as such…intellectual, environmental, and occupational. But, really they are very important. Discontentment with your job can certainly affect your emotional and physical state. A chaotic and disheveled home…the physical, emotional, and spiritual path can be hindered. Financial struggles/imbalance can bring stress, anger, frustration which in turn hinders other attributes. Intellectual wellness. Yes, indeed. A stagnant mind can be detrimental to the balance.
    Balance. Step by step…being aware..support from/with others…

This has given me pause for some good ‘ol thought processing of where I am.

Can I say again, loved this post. Thank you!

    1. Welcome to the blog Cris!

Glad you could resonate with the post and liked the various dimensions of wellness. Yes indeed, it’s tough to fine tune all the aspects of wellness as life is full of ups and downs, and none of us can really say what’s going to happen next.

Life presents us with various opportunities, but it also brings forth stress, tensions, disappointments, sadness, anger, frustration, and heartbreak- to name a few. The dimensions of wellness cover up these various aspects and how we can overcome them (at least we can try to!) How we deal with our life and react to various situation is what makes us what we are.

I liked the way you put up the various examples and linked them up with the the various dimensions of wellness. And am happy that the post gave you a moment to think about where you stand 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and for liking the post 🙂

  15. Harleena..a lady of my own heart!

It is great to see your definitions and understandings of Wellness…I hadnt really thought about all of the different dimensions but the way you write about them i can easily see how each link to each other and are all equally important for us to feel and be well. Thanks. Useful post. For me, spiritual wellness forms the core of my “wellness quota”–and when I dont make time to meditate, practice yoga and just be..life feels so much more difficult.

    1. Glad you could resonate with the post Ntathu & thanks for those kind words!

Like you, most of us never really sit down to think about the various dimensions of wellness, till someone brings it to our notice. I guess we tend to take what life brings forth and try to put those things in line with wellness, which otherwise is a much wider term and covers many aspects.

Nice to see that you could best relate to the Spiritual aspect of wellness, which is so important for all of us. And yes, yoga, meditation, deep breathing are all ways to achieve spiritual as well as physical wellness.

Thanks so much for stopping by 🙂

  16. In my personal opinion, if you can maintain a positive ‘Aptitude and Attitude’, rest everything comes automatically. The short cuts referred are nothing but a reflection of over confidence.

Confidence can be achieved only : In a field for which you have :
    1. Aptitude ( What you like and how much?).
    2. Your attitude…and its degree… how far you are prepared to go for getting / mastering  your dream for which you long ( aptitude).
    3. Knowledge to convert your dream to reality.
    4. Most important is a “Set of rules” following which  you can put your acquired knowledge to practice.
    5. Skill developed through practice.
    6. Peak “Efficiency” gained through constant practice, and lastly;
    7. Your capability to repeat peak efficiency performance under all circumstances, except  a few adverse ones – (over which humans don’t have a control) —- is termed as  “CONFIDENCE.”

Now coming to over confidence: The moment you even think of increasing your efficiency level through short cuts ( bypassing set of rules)…you are termed as over confident because even if you just thought but did not bypass ‘The Set Of Rules” in the very first case; be certain that you will do that some day.

    1. Welcome to the blog Rajendranath!

Thank you for such a wonderful explanation of aptitude, attitude and confidence, though I couldn’t relate wellness to it- nor did I find anything concerning the post in your comment? Or did you mean to say that confidence is the base or root of wellness?

I approved the comment so that you could share your thoughts further with the readers by explaining things more in detail, related and about wellness 🙂

      Thanks 🙂

    1. Welcome to the blog Patti!

Glad you liked the overview of wellness. And thanks for asking me to join your Page- always great to connect.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  17. Hi Harleena,

I believe that in order to achieve wellness, we should do the things that we like most because somehow we are not able to do those things, due to hectic lifestyle of ours. I myself, apart from work, love to attend music concerts, and for me its an energy booster. There are people who are so engaged in work that they do not even give time to their family members, and thus their family life is totally disturbed.

So, as we all know that we have to keep working for a lifetime, but there are some things that we should not ignore and we should never ever compromise with health because health matters a lot for every individual. If we are healthy then we can do work in a better way and of course productivity will be more and more. So guys and gals out there apart from work, do some interesting things also that you really want to do, to make life more exciting and wonderful. 😉

    1. Glad you could relate to the post Manish!

Yes indeed, our hectic lifestyles keeps us away from really doing the things that we would want to otherwise do. I guess we do need to take out some time during the day for ourselves, where we can just do the things we like. This is one way to achieve the dimensions of wellness.

Nice to learn that you find physical wellness of importance, as without health you cannot really achieve the other aspects. But yes, alongside we all do need to work on the other dimensions of wellness so that we are able to achieve them with time.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  18. All round wellness is ideal, but so tough to practice in today’s hectic lifestyle. 🙂 People are so caught up in “must do’s” and perceived priorities that they tend to neglect self care, from where all efficiency must stem.

    This is a good read!

    1. Glad you could resonate with the post Vidya!

Yes indeed, achieving all round wellness is tough, though as long as we keep trying and making our efforts- we are on the right track 🙂

I guess our lives have become hectic and kind of ‘robotic’ in nature, and our priorities have changed, which stops us from reaching overall wellness, even if we may want to. Unless we make that deliberate attempt and effort to change ourselves by changing our lifestyles, things are going to remain tough!

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

      1. Yes, I think that few people really stop to consider the impact of their mental or emotional state on their bodies. But when a person finally does make that connection, it can be a real eye opener.

        1. Such people are indeed rare, though even if small efforts are made to achieve a few dimensions of wellness, they can gain a lot. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  19. Hi Harleena,

I love how you lay out the different kinds of wellness. I had not thought in those terms before – at least not that in depth. This is an important post for those seeking to live a happier, more adjusted life.

Knowing the different kinds really helps to focus in on where I personally need to direct extra attention. Thanks for this.

    1. Welcome to the blog David!

Glad you liked the various dimensions of wellness, which we normally never sit to think of! Yes indeed, the post was written with an aim to help people realize the various aspects of wellness and how far they have reached, or what more they need to do to achieve wellness in their lives.

I guess what matters most is that we keep striving to make an effort to attain our level of wellness, or achieve what we haven’t already!

      Thanks for stopping-by 🙂

      1. It does seem that it is too our benefit to keep striving forward. We know so little about this universe and even our own bodies and health. There is always more to learn / achieve. Thanks for helping us on the journey.

  20. I love this post Harleena and you said it so well. Our well being does depend on so much and so many people just aren’t aware how much affect each of these areas really has on our life in general.

I’m by no means perfect in all of these areas but I always like to say I’m still a work in progress. I’ve done a lot of soul searching since the end of 2006 so I can honestly say that I’ve come a long way baby. I started to understand that all of this is intertwined into my own happiness so making sure I have all these areas aligned was so important to me.

I’m in such a better place now than I ever have been but like I said, I still have a ways to go.

Really great post and I love your quotes also. They are always so spot on.

    Hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

    ~Adrienne

    1. Glad you loved the post Adrienne!

Yes indeed, people in general aren’t really aware that our wellness depends a great deal on the various dimensions mentioned above. I guess we remain too busy in our hectic lives to really sit back and give ‘wellness’ a real thought!

None of us are perfect, nor can we really say we have achieved all the above mentioned dimensions of wellness. But yes, just as you so rightly mentioned, we need to be in a work in progress to get there- with time.

The amount you have undergone and overcome in your life has been remarkable, and am sure the soul searching would have helped you a great deal to achieve inner growth via spiritual wellness. But yes, there is always scope for improvement and trying to achieve more 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and liking the post as well as the quotes. I would really be lost without them 🙂

I do look forward to the weekends, a time away with my kids and family. Hoping you are enjoying yours as well 🙂

  21. Dear Harleena,

    What a lovely post!

I think that this is indeed timely. So many people do fall prey to “shortcuts” in an attempt to be well. We can see evidence of this everywhere we turn. There are so many fads out there which claim to do things overnight…the truth is that nothing lasting usually happens that way. And pretty much anything worth doing is worth the time investment.

I am happy that you included point #7. For me, finding spiritual center was a pivotal point in my own wellness journey. I work at this continually because it is one of those things that helps me feel well in all of the other ways. I think that for us to be individuals who feel “whole” we must nourish all of the parts of us.

    What wonderful reminders and tips!

    Thanks, Harleena!

    Cat 😉

    1. Glad you liked the post Cat!

You are so right about the shortcuts people tend to take, in about every small thing nowadays. People prefer adopting these shortcuts to achieve wellness, which in turn just takes them further away from wellness, as it’s all superficial. In a way, it’s our hectic schedule and busy lifestyles, with no time to sit and give things a real thought that causes all such problems.

Nice to know that you keep trying to achieve spiritual wellness and it means a great deal to you, which in fact for most is tough to attain. And if you can attain this wellness, the others are not difficult to attain as well.

Being humans, it’s not really possible to achieve all these dimensions of wellness, though it’s worthwhile to keep trying and making our best efforts.

Thanks for stopping by and adding more value to the post 🙂

  22. Hi Harleena,

To me, wellness is a mix of the areas. But some are more important than others. And I’m not as focused on the financial wellness as much as I am on the spiritual wellness. But it’s important with financial security. What I focus the most on is my family, and as long as my kids are happy, and my wife is happy, I am usually happy as well 🙂

One of the reasons why I am starting my own business is because I have been looking for freedom, and to do what I like, when I like. And to be around for my kids whenever they need me.

    1. Glad you could relate to the post Jens!

To most of us, wellness is a mix of the areas mentioned, though it’s rare that we can cover all the dimensions of wellness at a given time.

Nice to know that you are not focused on the financial, but rather on the spiritual, which is any day more important to our personal inner growth. Yes, the financial aspect cannot be neglected altogether, and that can be handled within limits that we set ourselves.

I like that- your focus on your kids, wife, and family. Something that all of us should be doing. I guess that makes you a happy and content person, and you really don’t have to dwell on other areas 🙂

Starting your own business in order to be your own master and have your own working hours is wonderful. This is one thing that I too did when I shifted to freelance writing after leaving my full time job. I wanted my own freedom and working hours, and most importantly the time I could give my kids and family.

Wishing you all the best in your new business and thanks for stopping by 🙂

  23. Hi Harleena,

I like to think of “wellness” as a balance of all the areas you mention.

Saying this however, “Balance” is not something that has come easily to me in this life. The reason for this is that I came here to resolve issues around balance and anything we have come to resolve is a challenge until we have done enough work.

I am a lot better at balance than I was. in my younger days. For much of my young life it was all or nothing and very little in between which made for a very exhausting life.

I am better at some areas than others however so for me it is important to increase my awareness of how I am doing, almost like a report card. As long as I know that I am working on all these areas then I am happy. Sometimes it means one or two areas that are well developed have to take a back seat but I know it’s temporary while I try to bring things into better balance.

    ~Marcus

    1. Glad you could resonate with the post Marcus!

You are so right when you say that wellness is a balance of all the areas mentioned or comprises of all the dimensions. But yes, it is not easy to attain or strike the right balance, thus none of us are fully complete or whole where wellness is concerned.

Nice to learn more about you and your experiences Marcus, and you are not alone! I think most of us are on the same lines where balance is concerned, as when we are younger our aim or motive is so different from what it is now. That makes a lot of difference to the way we act, behave, or react to things.

The true realization or the way to wellness often strikes us as we grow older, though as long as we keep working to reach there- we are on the right track. I guess most people would want to achieve these dimensions of wellness and would try their best or try working towards achieving them, and that is what matters most- that you keep trying.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  24. Hi Harleena,

I enjoyed reading your insights on the different forms of wellness, and how to go about achieving it for ourselves.

I related with each of them, but right now in my journey of where I am in life I relate mostly to the spiritual, emotional, and the intellectual. Each of these have begun to redevelop a new life for me, allowing me to think with an open mind about different scenarios and experiences that I may come in contact with. I’m better able to express my feeling being more in tune with my spiritual life. It has cleared out a lot of the extra junk that was floating around in my mind before.

I agree with you that each of them are important areas in our lives that we should focus our attention on to ensure that we are in balance with our well being. Being out of touch with it would do more harm to us in the long run.

You really have a great eye for quotes. Each time I read one of your post, you share several thought provoking quotes, along with your enlightening words.

This was really a great reading, Harleena. I think that it will be helpful for many others as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. 🙂

    Have a great weekend. 🙂

    1. Sorry for the late reply Deeone!

I truly thought I had, guess I missed it 🙂

I can well understand how and why you so relate to the emotional, spiritual, and the intellectual dimensions of wellness. Guess you have had a life filled with many wonderful experiences that have made you evolve into the person you are today.

I feel that all of us go through a great deal in our lives, sometimes good, sometimes bad. And how we learn to cope or deal with those upheavals and relate to the situations is what life is really all about- isn’t it? And with each new turn life takes, we learn something new and another new aspect of wellness is learnt.

I was able to relate to the aspect of financial wellness much later in life, while the other dimensions I keep working at to get better. It sure is different for each one of us and how best we relate to our level of wellness also depends from one person to another. All that matters at the end is that we keep striving to get better and gradually move towards achieving overall wellness.

You are quite right about keeping pace and incorporating these dimensions of wellness in our daily lives, as being out of touch can do us more harm in the long run.

Ah…I love quotes and more than half my time goes in hunting for the apt quotes and images! That takes more time than writing a post 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by and adding more value to the post 🙂

  25. Wow I didn’t realise there were quite so many ways of being well! Thanks for the information, this is definatley something I will be thinking about.

    1. Welcome to the blog Harriet!

Glad you could resonate with the post, and yes, there are many dimensions of wellness. Hope you try and achieve most of these, if you haven’t already done so!

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  26. Hey Harleen!

Another beautiful post! I love the concept of emotional wellness, I feel we get so busy with the financial and physical aspects of our lives that we forget the emotional self that we have to tend to and thus, neglecting a very important part of our lives.

I feel we need to focus on the emotional being just as equally! I don’t have a plan per se; but yes, I keep trying my best to find happiness in the things that I have and I believe that will lead to an all around wellness! I believe we need to find satisfaction and happiness in the small and the daily things that happen to us and that we come across. That is my personal take on my wellness!

As for physical, I am going to the gym daily, and yes, a walk or a jog is so rejuvenating! Thanks for this Harleen, it was a very well written post!

    1. Glad you liked the post Hajra!

Emotional wellness is often overlooked, just as you so rightly mentioned, so is the spiritual wellness. I guess we do get busy with the financial, occupational, and the physical aspects that the finer moments of life, which are the real essence to attaining overall wellness are often left behind.

Nice to hear that you keep trying to work out a way so that your emotional wellness is balanced out with the other aspects. And that is what really matters at the end of the day- the trials and efforts that you make 🙂

You will be surprised at the smallest of things that can actually make us happy, though we fail to recognize those and tend to run after things that are either superficial, or the ones that won’t last a lifetime.

Most of the other dimensions of wellness like physical, intellectual, environmental, and social are often manageable or can be worked out. It’s just the finer ones like emotional or spiritual that need a little of our attention to make it a complete wellness for us 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping-by, and am so happy you liked the post. 🙂
