Don’t we all often think about finding easy ways to achieve wellness? In the desperate need to acquire wellness, we often fall prey to shortcuts.

You may find many wellness commercial products that offer easy solutions and make too-good-to-be-true promises, but you do not always need medicines to help you achieve wellness.

In fact, to achieve health and wellness is not tough, and all that’s needed is for you to give it some serious thought. An in-depth understanding of wellness will help us realize that it depends a great deal on our lifestyle, our state of mind, and the choices that we make.

“The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.” ~ Euripides

Meaning of Health & Wellness

The terms health and wellness differ in meaning. Wellness is the pursuit of good overall mental, physical, and emotional health that involves the conscious decision on the part of the individual.

On the other hand, health simply denotes a state of fitness or the person’s condition- whether it has abundance or lack of certain aspects, exhibits abnormality, or harbors diseases etc.

We are going to pursue wellness as our overall or comprehensive health, which takes into account everything ranging from our subtlest mental aspects to the gross physical factors.

How Can You Achieve Wellness?

You can achieve wellness, by staying in good condition mentally, physically, spiritually, and by revitalizing your whole being that consists of the- body, mind and spirit.

Wellness is no separate entity- it’s an aggregate of our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

“The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually.” ~ Greg Anderson

Let me begin by asking you a few questions- Are you tired of feeling drained? Do you feel you are losing your health, vitality, and the spark you once had, and want it back? Do you wish you were healthier but don’t know where to begin?

In brief- if you have such questions in your mind and want to achieve wellness but don’t know how to achieve it, then this post would definitely help you.

Most of us want more energy, greater vitality, health and wellness, but due to our hectic schedules and busy professions, these objectives are compromised and take a back seat.

So, here’s a reminder to all the entrepreneurs and professionals alike: if you increase your wellness quotient, you definitely increase your creativity, quality, and productivity, and thus have a greater chance of achieving success in whatever you do!

I have had the opportunity to study wellness in detail, and came to know that wellness is in reality a combination of many dimensions of our life.

Once the various dimensions of wellness are met, you are considered whole or complete, and when you’re complete, then you’re happy with yourself, and in turn with others. When we are at peace with ourselves, happiness flows in and out, enabling us to exude our best.

Here’s your chance to know more about the wellness dimensions and to try out the suggested ways to achieve wellness, which I am sure, will transform your body, mind, and soul.

Dimensions of Wellness

Mentioned below are the eight dimensions of wellness that really affect the way you feel about yourself.

1- Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness is the ability to handle your emotions in a constructive and positive manner, to maintain them in a healthy state and cope with the challenges life can bring about.

It’s all about how well you cope with stress, anger, fear, sadness; how you manage your behavior and feelings; how well you are able to express your self-confidence, love, joy, and happiness. These are all key elements to build your emotional well being.

People who are emotionally well have the ability to express their feelings and manage their feelings effectively. They are well aware, and accept a variety of feelings in themselves and in others.

By doing so, they cultivate wellness in themselves. Develop your emotional aspect, and the skill of managing it.

2- Environmental Wellness

Environmental wellness is an appreciation for the external environment, and the role a person play’s in improving, and preserving environmental conditions.

As an environmentally-friendly person, you can try and conserve energy, treasure earth’s natural resources, buy organic food and products, use recycled thing, and appreciate what nature offers them.

Improve environmental wellness by making your environment and home cleaner. How does this help you? Well, you end up making your house a safer place for you and your family to live in, and you feel good about it!

3- Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual wellness is about learning and keeping the mind engaged in stimulating activities, and the ability to engage in clear thinking and recall.

You need to have an active mind that’s receptive to new ideas, seeks new challenges, is able to think and analyze critically, is creative, curious, and remains motivated.

To achieve intellectual wellness, you need to develop hobbies and interests that include reading, learning new languages, problem solving or solving puzzles, creating art, and many such others, which are all activities supporting brain development.

People who are intellectually well will challenge and stretch their minds with creative and intelligent pursuits, instead of becoming self-satisfied and unproductive.

4- Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to lead a day, free from physical stress or fatigue.

Physical wellness is all about being at your physical best, and it enables you to live a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life.

This kind of wellness is developed by eating the right kind of food, getting enough sleep, and practicing healthy exercise habits.

You need to eat a nutritious diet that’s rich in minerals and vitamins, good in fats, with lean protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber.

To benefit your heart and improve or maintain your health, try cardio exercises 3-4 times a week. Also, don’t forget to take relaxation breaks to de-stress and relax daily.

Recognizing that your behavior has a significant impact on your wellness and adopting healthful eating habits like a balanced diet, routine checkups, exercise, and avoiding destructive habits like drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, will lead you to optimal physical wellness.

Physical wellness also involves knowing how to take care of minor illnesses, requirement to seek medical attention, and developing the personal responsibility for your own health.

Physically well people appreciate and understand the relationships between sound nutrition and how their body performs. The feeling of looking and feeling good often leads to an enhanced feeling of self-control, self-esteem, determination, and a sense of direction.

5- Occupational Wellness

Occupational wellness is the ability to attain personal fulfillment from our chosen career fields or jobs, while maintaining a balance in our lives.

Such wellness is related to our attitude about our work, and our personal satisfaction and enrichment in our life through work.

Important components of occupational wellness are the choice of profession, career ambition, job satisfaction, and personal performance.

Your desire to contribute in your career to make a positive impact on the organization you work in and to the society as a whole, leads to occupational wellness.

To achieve occupational wellness, you need to do exactly what you want to do in life, and you need to be comfortable with your future plans as well.

6- Social Wellness

Social wellness is your contribution to the community, and how you cultivate and build better living spaces and social networks. Such kind of wellness is about enjoying work and leisure activities that involves interaction with others.

Social wellness is the ability to connect and relate to one another in our world, to establish and maintain positive relationships with our family, friends, and co-workers.

Of course, social networking options like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ among others do help create extensive social networks and cultivate social wellness. However, the importance of live social interactions cannot be ruled out.

People with social wellness are able to better relate to others, and are able to build nurturing relationships that foster love through trust.

They have satisfying relationships and support groups, participate and contribute to the community, pick up good communication skills, and establish social closeness and intimacy.

7- Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives. This wellness occurs when our beliefs and values are aligned with our actions, and we can live in a state of harmony with the outer world while balancing our inner needs.

Such wellness is all about exploring about who you are as a spiritual being, of looking within and identifying your core inner beliefs that make you unique. Your spirituality is defined by your faith (in religion), beliefs, values, principles, and morals.

People with such wellness may experience a variety of feelings. Some days you may be filled with joy and excitement, while at other days you may feel lost, doubtful, or afraid. However, these are normal feelings to the expansion to your spiritual self, or can be called spiritual growing pains.

You enjoy spiritual wellness and health when you develop the inner quality of being compassionate, loving, forgiving and joyful. Spiritual wellness or spiritual health is promoted through activities like self-exploration, energy clearing, and mediation.

People seeking spiritual wellness take out time from their daily routines for spiritual growth and learning. They have a clear sense of right and wrong, and act accordingly.

8- Financial Wellness

Financial wellness is the ability to secure your financial future by getting or staying out of debt. There’s no doubt that most of us continuously aspire to develop this form of wellness.

You can achieve such kind of wellness by having a plan B ready, making a habit of saving money for a rainy day or your retirement, earning extra money to keep aside to secure your financial health, if something bad happens.

It is indeed difficult to say that we can do well in all the above mentioned dimensions of wellness. Speaking of myself, I still need to work upon certain aspects of financial and environmental wellness, while I am trying hard for getting closer to spiritual wellness for my inner growth!

Wellness for me is all about the healthy balance of the body, mind, and spirit, which has an impact on my overall personality. Wellness is precious and clearly determinates the feel-good factor of our life.

Leaving out a few wellness dimensions won’t steal the happiness out of your lives, but striving for complete wellness will keep that special smile always on your face. It will equip you well and give you peace of mind, wherever you are.

“Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.” ~ Mary Anne Radmacher
