7 Musical Instruments That Are Easy to Learn

Do you like the string musical instruments or prefer the percussion instruments? Here are the major musical instruments of all kinds for you to choose from.

Guitar

Perhaps the musical instrument that most people seek to learn is the guitar.

Guitars are string instruments that have anywhere between four and eighteen strings, though normal guitars typically have six strings.

Guitars are played by holding one hand over the fretboard and pressing down on strings, while “strumming” the strings that are at the opposite end of the instrument using the other hand.

There are many cognitive benefits to learning the guitar, including improving motor skills, sharpening focus and concentration, and enhancing memory retention. It can also improve your social skills and help you build confidence as you find others who also play the guitar.

With just a little bit of practice, you can vastly improve your technique and quickly memorize the guitar neck as individual notes instead of simple patterns.

Keyboard

The electronic piano is a low-maintenance and extremely versatile piece of equipment, making it the perfect instrument for beginners of any age.

Keyboards, as they’re more commonly known, are capable of creating synthesizer tones and re-creating a number of other instrument sounds.

If you’re someone looking to learn how to play the piano, a keyboard is the perfect stepping stone. It’s inexpensive in comparison and portable while still having the same setup.

Much like the guitar, learning to play the keyboard can help memory, focus, and concentration skills and improve fine motor skills.

Harmonica

By far the easiest instrument to play on this list is the harmonica.

It’s fairly simple to use: you just use your lips to blow out air into the holes of the instrument. You can produce a simple melody in a few minutes.

To really learn how to play it well, you do need to learn how to adjust your mouth position to change pitch. You’ll have to know how to move the instrument in specific ways so the melody in your head matches what comes out of the harmonica.

The biggest appeal of this musical device is its small size. It can fit into almost any pocket, making it conveniently portable. You can practice anywhere you go and whenever you’d like.

Another plus to playing the harmonica is that it’s easy to learn quickly. It doesn’t have multiple parts and requires no sheet music to produce a tune. It’s something you can learn completely on your own with maybe a little help from some online resources.

Learning to play this instrument can help you relieve stress as you can pull it out and start playing a few notes whenever you feel anxious.

Ukulele

The melodic tunes the ukulele produces can transport you to your island paradise.

Learning to play this instrument not only means that you’ll always have a little slice of paradise, but it also means that you’re investing in an inexpensive but rewarding hobby.

Ukuleles are four stringed instruments that come in a few different sizes. The soprano uke is small, while baritones and tenors are larger. Ukuleles are the most portable options on this list, meaning you can practice no matter where you are.

Violin

The violin seems more intimidating than it actually is.

It will take some time to get the positioning of the bow and your hands down. However, once you learn which notes make what sounds, playing becomes second nature.

Some advantages to choosing the violin include how lightweight and portable the instrument is, and its versatility of sound. Violins can play a part in all manner of musical genres. Other benefits of playing violin are improving the musicians’ posture, timings, and coordination.

A big downside of choosing the violin is its cost.

For a basic violin, you’re looking to spend about $200 at a minimum. While that doesn’t seem too steep, the violin is also an instrument that basically requires an expert’s helping hand. The cost of lessons will add to that price tag, making learning the violin quite an investment.

Drums

Drums are a bit more complicated to master than the others on this list, but with the advice of professionals, like the experts from DCP, you can easily learn to play the drums.

They are percussion instruments and are an ancient form of creating music.

Depending on the musical genre you want to play and then the shape and size of the instrument, there are hundreds of different drum types out there that give versatility of choice to the players.

Drums are played by being struck by beaters. The most common beater is wooden sticks, but drummers use their bare hands and wire brushes as well.

The instrument produces sound by the vibrations of the stretched membrane. The drums can help improve coordination and timing as well as relieve stress.

Flute

The flute is another surprisingly easy instrument to master. With just a little practice, anyone can learn to play this musical device.

The flute is a woodwind instrument, and – fun fact – it produces a sound closest to the range of human vocal sounds than any other instrument. It was purposely created to sound similar to the human singing voice.

To master the flute quickly, you must practice through breathing and hand coordination exercises. You can even practice your hand coordination for the flute without playing the instrument. You simply hold it in front of you and play out the needed finger combinations.

These techniques will help you master the coordination needed between breath control and embouchure opening. This way, learning the flute is ideal for those who aren’t able to actually produce noise in the spaces where they would practice.

The flute is also a great choice for those looking to improve coordination.

Wrapping Up – A Lifetime of Music

While getting into music may seem intimidating and overwhelming for adults, there is a world of possibilities for those willing to learn.

When considering the instrument that you should learn to play, go for the ones that get you excited. No matter how popular the instrument is or how hard it is to play, pursue what you want.

The simple act of bringing music into your life in some way will improve your life tremendously.
