6 Ways to Find and Manage Time While Working Full-Time

Here are a few ways you can liberate more time and maintain a balance between school and work.

Get Up Earlier

We all have the same 24 hours in our day. How we budget those hours makes a huge difference. Forget about late-night study sessions – they rarely enhance your understanding of the subject or help you retain information.

Get into the habit of “early to bed, early to rise.” Feed your brain when it is capable of receiving and retaining the information going in because that is difficult when you are tired and stressed.

Start by committing to being in bed just a half hour earlier at night and getting up a half hour earlier in the morning. Once you’re comfortable with that routine, expand to an hour earlier at both ends. If it’s feasible and you can still budget at least 7 hours to sleep, you can push it even further.

The more time you have to be productive when your energy levels are optimal, the higher the quality of your work will be.

Eat And Drink Regularly

This is one area that busy students tend to neglect, especially when they work full-time.

Your body needs fuel to be able to perform well both physically and mentally. If you eat well and stay hydrated, you will have more energy and will be less run down at the end of a long work day.

Let’s face it: you’re going to need to study anyway so give yourself a fighting chance. Don’t skip meals and keep a bottle of water nearby at all times.

If you work in food service, don’t fall into the trap of, “I’ll just grab something at work.” People in food service tend to rush through meals, engage in stress eating, and, at times, consume a little alcohol during their shifts.

Erratic eating patterns can disrupt your metabolism and restaurant food can quickly put you out of shape, even if your work is very physical. Alcohol will also dehydrate you so keep that in mind when deciding between water and a sip of wine. The water will do you much more good.

Schedule Your Classes Carefully

You might find it necessary to get creative when it comes to scheduling classes when you work full-time.

You are likely to have all kinds of schedule conflicts that seem impossible to manage. Keep in mind that most colleges and universities offer some of the same classes at night, over the summer, and during breaks.

Consider taking a few accelerated classes along the way in subject areas where you feel comfortable and are able to learn quickly. Summer and night classes typically take as little as a third or half the time to complete and should be easier to schedule around work. Instead of a four-month distraction, you might only have to adjust things for about five or six weeks.

The more time you liberate, the more time you will have to complete complex assignments like essays and term papers. Take advantage of any and all opportunities you have to free up the time to produce quality work.

Make Use of Academic Helps

There are numerous tools available to struggling college students both on campus and online. You are not the only one to ever take these classes and you would be amazed at the sheer number of resources that exist for virtually all study areas online.

Your school likely has tutoring and mentoring programs you can tap into for support. Some professors make all their notes and PowerPoint presentations available to their students as well. There are also online forums and study groups where you can get some of the tougher questions answered while you work that you can check on later.

For help with written assignments, it might be necessary to get some support developing drafts so you can more easily edit and submit a quality final product.

There are a number of online services that will assign you a term paper and essay writer to give guidance and provide a sample draft for you to tweak and turn in. Be sure anything you get from an online source is free of plagiarism before submitting.

Use Your Paid Time Off

You might want to consider using earned vacation and personal time to lighten your load at pivotal points in the semester, particularly when deadlines for written work are looming or when finals are drawing near. You want to be able to stay as focused as possible and still have enough money coming in to meet all your responsibilities (and pay down some of that student debt!).

Check your employer’s time off policies and determine how much paid time off you have available. Next, work with your manager or human resources department to implement a time off strategy that favors your academic responsibilities, especially turning in your papers on time.

Budget Some Leisure Time

This is the most important piece of the puzzle. You need some “you” time that isn’t work or school so designate some downtime and use it well. Even if it’s just a matter of a few hours a week, don’t crack the books, don’t think about work, just relax and enjoy those few moments of clarity and rest.

Wrapping Up – A Fine Balance

If you are working full-time and attending classes full time, you are already disciplined enough to make this work.

Nevertheless, if you apply some of the suggestions I’ve made to your work/school strategy, it will help you become even more disciplined. You’ll also find it easy to increase your focus and get all your work submitted on time to have that fine balance you need while working full-time.

Over to You –

In which of the areas above do you think you might lack discipline or direction? Which ones should you be working on right now to ensure success?
