The Turks and Caicos Islands are one of those perfect destinations for a relaxing time, enjoying sunny days, being one with nature and experiencing the joy of sea diving. If you’ve a vacation coming up then here’s some information about how to plan your visit to the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands and shortlist the activities that you must do there. ~ Ed.

The Turks and Caicos Islands, or TCI as they’re usually referred to, are an enclave of cays and small islands, situated in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean. They come under the British Overseas Territory and as the name suggests, are divided into two groups of islands, the Caicos and the Grand Turks.

The TCI is divided by the Columbus Passage which is 20 miles long. What makes these islands a point of attraction is that they experience year-long sunny days with very little rain, making them the ideal location to visit any time of the year. This makes finding vacation rentals in Turks and Caicos a very easy task.

The islands are also one of the most beautiful places the Caribbean has to offer. So, in case you are planning to visit anytime soon, here are some tips that will make travelling in the Turks and Caicos that much more enjoyable.

How to Reach The Turks and Caicos Islands

The easiest way to reach TCI is by a cruise ship. You can enjoy the sea breeze while relaxing on a boat with many amenities to make your journey even more exhilarating. Cruise Ships run daily and drop you off to the Grand Turks where you can begin your experience.

If you want to save some time, you can also reach TCI by plane. All the flights to TCI land at Providenciales International Airport (PLS) from where you’ll have to take another flight that’ll drop you in the Grand Turks. These are local flights that run daily and cost anywhere in between 100 to 200 dollars, depending n the time.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • If you’re travelling by cruise, all the immigration and customs matters will be taken care of by the cruise lines.
  • Keep extra photocopies of your passport and passport size photos with you at all times.
  • Register in your country’s embassy in the British Overseas Territory before making your trip in case of a natural disaster or some other emergency.
  • Keep your luggage light and only carry tropical clothes with you as the TCI don’t have a cold weather.
  • Make sure to carry your authentic prescriptions if you’re carrying any drugs or medications with you.

Must-do Activities in the The Turks and Caicos Islands

If you plan to visit the Turks and Caicos Islands then you must not miss on these activities. You’d love the different experience and make your vacation memorable.

Take a Trip to Bird Rock Point

Situated on the Long Bay Hills, this is one of the best places to visit in the TCI if you want to escape the noise of the city and be one with nature for some time.

Urban development projects are yet to lay there hands on this serene slice of paradise itself where you may take the meandering trails through the sandy coves and spy the exquisite marine life thriving in the sapphire waters.

Explore the coastal and marine wetlands and stroll through the golden and shadowy sand coves and rocky seashores. The land lies covered in soft sea grass and coastal firth vegetation and as you traverse, the soft echo of the rare Caribbean birds will fill your senses. Situated very close to a city, this place is easily accessible and must be visited during your stay in the TCI.

Enjoy scuba diving

For all the adrenaline junkies out there as well as people who would like to try sea diving, the Turks and Caicos got you covered.

The scuba divers consider this place a mecca for sea diving. The islands are situated right on the edge of two underwater mountain plateaus making the diving here a heavenly experience. You can experience the underwater life, see the coral reefs and the magnificence of the marine life in the reefs and the cays. You can also swim along the steep walls of the mountain plateaus over the dark ocean floor that goes as deep as 7000 feet!

Meet JoJo the Dolphin

Probably the best and the cutest thing that you can experience here is meeting JoJo the dolphin. He’s an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin who has been hanging around and interacting with humans there since the early 80’s.

He lives in his natural habitat in the sea and is one of the very few dolphins around the world who voluntarily hangs out with humans and plays with them. He’s also a government proclaimed national treasure and the face of nature and sea life conservation in the area.

Visit Caicos Conch Farm

You can find the only conch farm in existence in the Caicos. The conches that are exported from here have gone viral in the culinary world because of their exquisite yet unfamiliar taste.

The farm itself leaves no stone upturned while educating you in the whole process of harvesting conches. You can see the conches breed and see the process of them growing from their larvae stage to that of an adult. There is also a daily show that involves two adult queen conches and in itself is something to behold.

And there’s more, of course. Buy yourself your own conches to cook your own salads and other delicacies at home or just to appreciate the pearls that reside inside. But whatever you do, make sure to partake of the mouth-watering conch delicacies that the farm itself serves up.

Wrapping Up

There are, of course, a lot more things to do and see in the heavenly abode that is the Turks and the Caicos. The slow, swelling beat that runs through the sands of the Caribbean charms the visitors of this land too.

But that is something that a million words cannot sum up and everyone must experience the breathtaking beauty of the Caribbean on their own at least once in their lives.

So, let go of all doubts and worries and pack your bags. Sapphire waves and golden sand await.
