In this post, I’ve compiled all the negative aspects of losing weight fast that I found during my research. I hope you do not practice any of these unhealthy ways to lose weight fast.

Well, with life becoming so fast-paced and hectic nowadays, and with most of us leading a sedentary lifestyle, we are faced with the problem of weight gain.

If you do not control the increasing body weight, you run the risk of harboring many diseases.

This warning is not only for the obese, but even those who lie on the borderline of the normal health index and are at high risk of falling in the obese group.

Those who have an ideal weight and are physically fit may not need to look for ways to lose weight. However, they also need to follow a healthy lifestyle to maintain their weight and health.

You especially need to lose weight if you have medical conditions like osteoarthritis, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases.

Did you know that for every pound of weight gain, your body exerts an added pressure of four pounds on your knees? This could either wreck your knees or cause difficulty in walking.

While finding the healthy ways to lose weight, I came across these unhealthy ways to get skinny and was rather amazed to see the extent to which people go to achieve their objectives.

Trying to Lose Weight by Starving and Skipping Meals

To be honest with you, once upon a time I also tried doing this to lose weight. But I now know that this is not a healthy method.

There is a major difference between fasting and starving. When you fast it cleanses and detoxifies the body. Moreover, a controlled fast normally lasts for a specific period after which we start eating normal food once again.

Starvation, on the other hand, means the restriction of food for a longer time period or people do it on a regular basis. What really happens is that your body doesn’t get the required calories or nutrients to function well.

Yes, you do lose some weight. However, you lose weight from all parts of your body, which also includes, fat, muscle, water, and even bone. I hope you realize that this is not of the ways to lose weight that you’d like to use.

As a matter of fact, you end up not only burning the fat in your body but also depleting the essential elements. You do more harm than good.

There’s one more thing. When you starve yourself or skip meals with the hope that you will lose weight permanently, the lost weight springs right back more and sooner than you can imagine!

Once you eat your meals the metabolism increases, and if you skip meals often, your metabolism slows down that may lead to weight gain.

When you try losing weight by following severe calorie restrictions, starvation, or anorexia, know that you follow unhealthy ways to lose weight fast that works but are dangerous.

This can affect you adversely and often leads to the inability to concentrate, fatigue, light-headedness, and often fainting.

I did try it once by following a diet plan for a month. Sure, I sure did lose a few kilos, but it came right back when I stopped taking this diet! I didn’t let it get past more than what it was earlier but realized that such things never work.

There are so many fad diets like Atkins diet, Hoodia diet, Zone diet, which people follow without consultation as the ways to lose weight.

Sometimes people get fed up of one diet and switch to another without completing one, so they never get to know if it really works or not.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), any kind of fad or crash diets for losing weight rapidly is not good. You tend to regain the weight when you stop the diet.

Such diets, according to AHA cause gastrointestinal problems, damage your health and can lead to malnutrition, especially those that lay stress on eating a particular kind of food and eliminate others.

Let’s face it; our body needs a good balance of fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and all the essential minerals. In fact, our body needs healthy fats, which actually help you burn the excess or unhealthy fat.

However, some people love to follow the no-calorie diet or zero-calorie diets where they even consume artificial sweeteners as the fastest way to lose weight.

That’s bad because you gain weight if you consume diet drinks. Your body stores the fat and reacts to sweetness just as it would if you had something sweet.

Losing Weight by Consuming Drugs and Pills without Consultation

Even though we know there are no magic pills for losing weight, yet we take them.

Drugs like cocaine, crack, and methamphetamines (speed) are mostly used as ways to lose weight fast. If these drugs are taken for long-term, they can damage your brain and heart.

Celebrities are often prescribed drugs like Adderall and ADHA Ritalin for weight loss too.

Some supplements help in burning fat, but they must be accompanied with healthy eating and exercises. Moreover, healthy eating should include healthy supplements that are whole-food based.

Some people use illicit diet drugs that can cause irregular heartbeat, dehydration, and even be a cause of yo-yo diet syndrome just because they wanted a fastest way to lose weight.

These diet drugs cause acidity and toxicity in the body. Also, as our brain is affected by such things, it can lead to lack of concentration and irritability as well.

In terms of weight loss, these drugs affect only until they are consumed. Often, when such drugs are discontinued, it can lead to withdrawal symptoms and regaining of lost weight.

To purge means to vomit the food from the stomach soon after eating.

The main concept behind purging is that the person is satisfied by eating the food, but doesn’t absorb the calories, thus will not gain weight.

This method is normally used after eating extremely large meals. However, the important fact that you miss is that you also lose the essential nutrients from the diet while purging.

Also, the repeated exposure to vomit’s acid can damage the glands in the mouth, your teeth, the stomach and esophagus as per the advisory of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

It can lead to serious problems of the esophagus and stomach like tears, ruptures, and ulcers. Though rare, chronic purging can lead to cancer or esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Those who practice purging are at a risk for pancreatitis, irregular heartbeats, heart failures, and death from bodily chemical imbalances.

Losing Weight fast by blindly using Laxatives

Laxatives are foods, drugs, supplements, or compounds that loosen the stool or induce bowel movement. These come in the form of pills, powders suppositories, liquids, and teas.

Laxatives have been used for weight loss for many years with the belief that these prevent the absorption of consumed foods.

By the time the laxative takes effect, the calories of the food consumed already make it to the bloodstream. It’s only the water weight that gets reduced from the use of laxatives.

Problems associated with laxatives taken short-term include dehydration and hemorrhoids. The long-term effects of using laxatives are renal failure, intestinal paralysis, pancreatitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Other possible effects of losing weight quickly with laxatives include kidney and colon problems, heart failures, a weekend immune system, and muscle pain or spasms.

Simply put, using laxatives continually can cause abdomen problems and weaken your digestive system. Ah, would you think of it as one of the fastest way to lose weight? I’m sure not. 🙂

Unhealthy Weight Loss by Opting to Smoke

You might think why smoking is also included as one of the fast and unhealthy ways of losing weight. Well, that’s because smoking is a popular way to suppress hunger.

Smoking sends unclear signals to the brain that increases the metabolic rate, thus killing hunger. People who smoke excessively can skip meals and still not feel hungry.

However, using such ways to lose weight damages the body because the body becomes weak and there are more chances of catching infections and even cancer.

Adopting Weight Loss Method of Straining by Over-Exercising

Exercising is a healthy weight loss method. But if you are already dieting and are undernourished, then over-exercising becomes one of the unhealthy ways to lose weight.

Extensive cardio or doing everything in excess is harmful.  A little bit of strength training and burst training for a few minutes is good enough. Don’t treat over-exercising as the fastest way to lose weight – it can be counterproductive.

When you work out, you also need to stick to a healthy diet in order to lose weight in a healthy way.

Losing Weight incorrectly using Saunas and Sweat Suits

Weight loss by using sauna or sweat suits is totally water weight. Such suits are mainly used by athletes who want to reduce weight for competitions only.

However, sometimes they can cause dehydration and increase the temperature of your body, especially if it gets out of control.

Some more extreme ways to lose weight fast include the use of electronic belts that produce electronic rays that are harmful to your skin. You don’t achieve the desired results, instead, the deep penetration of the rays damage your internal organs.

Even tummy tucks or liposuctions are not very healthy ways to lose weight. They reduce weight, though only for some time.

Overall these unhealthy ways to lose weight are not natural, and anything that is unnatural is unhealthy.

Just as I keep saying so often – it’s all in the mind. If you really wish to slim down then do not follow the above mentioned unhealthy ways to lose weight. Instead, try the following:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet.
  • Include more of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  • Limit the intake of fats, sugars, and carbohydrates.
  • Reduce your meal size gradually to the least required.
  • Drink lots of water and say no to fizzy and unhealthy drinks.
  • Exercise daily, pick up some sport, or just walk, as walking has its own benefits. Just 30-40 minutes of brisk walking for five days a week does wonders.
  • Always consult a nutritionist or dietitian before beginning any exercise or reducing your intake of food.

And purging will effects your ribs and lungs making you having breathing problems in future. There others ways like exercise, a having good clean food like salad, cereals and now a days new entrance slim and trim milk. Drinking slim trim milk will automatically keep your tummy full and will help you to avoid unwanted junk food, safe and healthy way to loose weight.

  12. Ditching the fizzy, unhealthy drinks has changed my life. Being far enough removed from them, the thought of drinking a soda makes me gag now. I used to drink a red bull every morning and a Mountain Dew with dinner. Combine that with working at a high stress office and having kids, I bloated in the stomach and looked 5 months pregnant (I’m a man, by the way).
    Having a glass of water first thing every morning and keeping one on my desk as I work has been huge. And taking one 30 min walk daily. No other crazy changes yet, I have just done both of those with consistency and cut out the other drinks for the last 3 months. I’ve lost 20 lbs. It’s not magic, it’s consistency!

  13. It’s amazing how we will try anything, even the craziest stuff, to look a certain way. Losing weight isn’t worth it if you’re not changing your lifestyle to maintain it. Dieting is garbage unless it’s a permanent change and not a temporary change.

    Even the guy from Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead gained a good portion of the weight he lost back because the changes he made were not sustainable. He fasted for 60 days, and then ate a plant-based diet for a set amount of time. However, he didn’t stick to it because he put a deadline on it.

  14. I am glad you distinguished between fasting and starving. Fasting, especially intermittent fasting (fasting for about 24 hours once a week), has been shown to be very beneficial. The theory that explains this is that during fasting our cells receive much less stress and as a result they have the opportunity to recover and enhance their ability to cope with stress.

    I find it hard to believe that there are people who choose laxatives and vomiting as their “smart” choice to lose weight. Good article.

  16. Great article! I’ve seen first hand how bad fad diets are. Many of my family members (and myself) have struggled with weight loss over the years, some of them taking to fad diets. Yes, they lose a couple of pounds but in the end they always gained it back! They just don’t work. Long ago, I changed my way of eating and made it a lifestyle and have never regained any of the weight! One thing I do religiously is drink at least one of my eight glasses of water a day with about 1-2 tspns of lemon juice in it. Great for cleansing and it helps keep my belly as flat as I can get it!

    You know a lot of fad diets I see floating around the net crack me up. I believe there was one called the grapefruit diet or something to that nature. Seriously, how do they come up with these diets? There is no magic pill, but people want to believe there are.

    I have had weight cuts of 30 pounds in a month or so. Basically, I just gradually declined my calories and did more cardio. However, I do have to admit I was irritable at times. I ate about 40 carbs a day and 200 or so on the weekend. It was brutal.

    Lot’s of people stop eating and don’t realize all they are doing is halting their metabolism. The weight comes back, too. For me, I just limit the calories and make sure I eat a balanced diet while trying to limit carbs. As a safety net use the treadmill and interval training when you eat to much 🙂

      Yes indeed, there are a lot of such diets that are rather confusing as we really don’t know what works and what doesn’t. More so, what works for one might not work for another – so one can’t really be sure and say anything about them. Never heard of the grapefruit diet, though with the large sugar content in it, I’m sure it would be having its adverse effects too, especially for people with diabetes!

      You did the right thing Garen, going slow, which is the key. Actually, when we follow such unhealthy ways to lose weight, we might lose a little initially, but over time we add on what we lose and perhaps a little more than before because we tend to eat up as much in a way to cover up for the time when we restricted ourselves.

      Reducing our caloric intake, accompanied with exercises and cardio is what really works, just as you mentioned, and you can never really go wrong there. But yes, do so without being too hard on yourself, or you have bad side-effects too. Having a little of everything, or having it in moderation is what works best.

    Great topic to discuss, since most people just decide to starve themselves or over-train. I have a lot of clients who are on the road to lose weight and I never put any of them on any type of the diet. We calculate how many calories they need to eat and cut out only a handful of foods from their menus (like chips and french fries) but they get to eat almost anything they want. Heck, some of them even eat ice cream after workouts 🙂

    The only thing that I would be careful is introducing a lot of fruits in a diet since fruits are full of sugars and cutting out too much carbs, because carbs aren’t the devil and you need them to build muscle.

    But bottom line, even tiny changes like giving up on mayo and one starbucks creamy coffee a week can make a huge difference. Adding some incline walks on a treadmill few times a week and you are on a HEALTHY road to weight loss and healthy life 🙂

      Dieting never really works I think, unless you are too obese and really can’t lose weight any other way. But even then, dieting would only be suggested for a limited time period or till you reduce a little to start exercising or walking, which are any day a healthier way to weight loss.

      Yes indeed, reducing the caloric intake from the unhealthy or fatty food we consume during the day is the key. While some people have a tough time not eating things they like or changing their lifestyle, they need to be guided by giving better food options like healthy things to munch or snack on. Chips and french fries are sure killers! Wow! Ice cream too – that’s interesting. 🙂

      Only a few fruits like grapes, bananas, and the extra sweet kind of fruits must be full of sugar, while others are usually recommended, or not? I guess eating them in limited quantity, though daily might be the key. Yes indeed, carbs are needed, though we need to know the right time to consume them I guess – like soon after your workout or for your breakfast, and how you cook them too.

      You’re absolutely right! Every small morsel we put into our mouth should be watched, and eating with your eyes open IS the key. You will be surprised at the amount you can really lose by just cutting down on the sugar intake too – I tried that out. 🙂

According to Mr. D’Adamo and Ms. Whitney, a vegetarian diet is best for my blood type.

    Ironically, I became a vegetarian in July 2010. I started taking a multi-vitamin again and feel much better. It’s amazing how a vitamin deficiency can cause anxiousness, fatigue, nervousness, and other issues. I’ve been educating myself about vitamins, especially B-vitamins. 🙂

      Oh yes! When you turn vegetarian when initially you were a non-vegetarian, you do need these supplements to cover up for any kind of deficiency as you mentioned. Or unless you ensure that your vegetarian diet is complete and similar to the non-vegetarian one you were having earlier. But yes, some people don’t believe in taking vitamins and prefer to go along without realizing that sooner or later it would start showing on their health.

  24. I do follow unhealthy ways to lose weight 🙂

    Well, I am running and walking a lot, so I do exercise, but I keep eating pizza and I love potato chips and Coca Cola Zero. So, what I do is mostly exercise more, but I don’t stop the eating. So, instead of just eating healthy and becoming fit, I keep exercising and eating. A bad habit, I admit that 🙂

      I guess nowadays it becomes tough to control ourselves, especially if you have kids at home who are forever munching on chips and pizzas and gulping down loads of cokes! Then, even if you do run and exercise, it has little affect on our body, or it just about neutralizes things – isn’t it?

      I like that…keep exercising and eating. That is the way, though eating right is what we also need to concentrate on. More so because our kids will follow what we do, so one needs to take care.

    1. So, you have also tried all the methods like a few others Nikky!

      I don’t think these methods should be tried because you can see the side effects they have on our body and system. Perhaps you can try out to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating a well-balanced diet, and taking out 30-40 minutes for exercising or even walking. And yes, try leading a stress-free life is you can. I know it’s not easy, but if we want to lose weight then we need to try out the healthy ways to lose weight.

  26. Ah let me tell you the ways.

    From when I was a teenager I used to skip meals which progressed into starving myself. This was due to bullying. Note: looking back on photos of myself I was a stick.

    It was a vicious circle as I used to faint or suffer from dizzy spells. In my twenties I developed bad gut pains from foods, so this again led me to skip meals / not eat. Throughout my twenties and early thirties I then over-exercised by becoming a bit a a gym junky. If I did not go to the gym, I would feel really guilty, and then have to exercise really hard. I then quit the gym and ate what I want, but ended up in a job where I couldn’t take lunch breaks, which lead to skipping meals, just eating what I could, etc etc.

    Through most of this I wasn’t actually overweight. Through most of it I was actually really skinny – and I know that now. Towards the end, I’d put on weight and it was going on very easily, and no longer coming off. I refused to starve myself again, but not even exercise or watching what I ate was helping. Unfortunately I’d also developed eczema on my face, extreme fatigue, bad circulation, vicious night sweats, brittle hair, and so on. I’d been to doctors and specialists over the years and they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. That’s when I went to a naturopath and had allergy tests and found out I have numerous food allergies, and had – to put it bluntly – stuffed up my body, including most of my organs and thyroid, from years of abuse.

    I started an allergy ‘eating plan’ (I hate calling it a diet) in December 2011.’ve now lost 11 kilos, don’t suffer from stomach pain and hardly any bloating, have more energy, my eczema has pretty much cleared, hair is healthier, circulation is great, and so on. I still suffer from night sweats, but that is one of the last things left that we are dealing with. The things we have traced all the issues down to are: starving myself / not eating right over the years, years of extreme stress (in various forms), and toxicity.

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing. When I started skipping meals I never thought I’d be feeling the effects so many years later.

      Ah…so you have already experienced most of the things mentioned in the post about the unhealthy of losing weight. I guess when we are in our teens a lot of us come under the influence of friends or tend to get bullied into doing things we really don’t want to do.

      I can well imagine how it must be feeling to not have any food and starve to such a state where you begin feeling faint or dizzy! I knew of a friend of mine in college who was doing the same thing, even though she was perfectly fit enough. Guess she wanted to become thinner than she already was.
      You certainly underwent a great deal trying to lose weight through various ways in your twenties and thirties, even though you were slim enough. And later too, till you found out that the real reason for the years of abuse – must’ve been terrible!

      I am glad that now you are over all that you underwent and things are working well for you as well. But you surely shared the real unhealthy ways to lose weight that some of us might be following.

  27. I’ve struggled all my life with weight. I tried pills and everything else you can think of (not the vomiting or anything like that)

    I do smoke, but heck that don’t keep the weight off, but when you decide to quit man it does bring on the pounds. Been there done that, but still smoking as I wasn’t trying to lose weight, was just trying to quit and well, it didn’t work. Will try again some other time when there is no stress in my life 🙂

    Eating healthy is not always easy as it may seem, as the cost of food has skyrocketed, but I am working on something to help train us all how to do just that and I was wondering if you would be willing to help – email me at this address, please 🙂

      I can well understand all that you have undergone to lose weight, which surely isn’t easy!

      Smoking might keep the hunger at bay for a while, but other than that the weight does return once you are back eating your food, just as you mentioned. I guess the key remains to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating a well-balanced meal and exercising.

      You raised a great question about the cost of food, and yes, that sometimes becomes an issue with most people. But I think, from the things we can afford also we can manage to choose what best does good to us, instead of really following what health sites recommend. We always do have choices – isn’t it?

      It also helps to just reduce the quantity of food intake by a little percent, just as I mentioned in an earlier comment, because that helps reduce the stomach size. Thus, you feel less hungry because your stomach is satisfied with little.

      Nice to know about your new project, and I shall surely be emailing you if I can be of any help. Yes, losing weight isn’t easy at all, and is something I also struggle with. But after having started to lead a healthier lifestyle, I know it is doing me good.

    Thanks for sharing – dieting – the bane of my existence! Can’t say I’ve ever really been successful at it so now I don’t do it. I try my best to eat healthy, and exercise. I didn’t have a weight issue until after my kids. Then when I tried to lose the extra weight by dieting, I failed each time. So I had to learn how to eat better and begin exercising again.

    Can’t say I’ve lost much weight, but I can say that I finally eat better most days – sometimes I just can’t resist that junky snack and with two voraciously hungry boys always eating (and staying slim I might add) – and I am feeling way better. Even working on running 3 miles 3-4 times a week. Got to have the energy and stamina to keep up with these kids!

    One strategy I try to stick with is buying the boys snacks that I don’t like. Then I’m not eating with them! Hmm – I wonder what snack those boys are getting into right now?

      Most of us seem to have tried to diet sometime or the other, being troubled by the weight issues. And eating a well-balanced diet, accompanied with exercise is what really does the trick, though not everyone can follow it as a routine nor make it a daily habit.

      Yes indeed, most women start gaining weight once they have kids. I guess they must be finishing up all the baby food when their little ones don’t finish it I used to do that for sometime, till I realized it was just adding up to my weight!

      Oh yes! The junk food and snacking kids nowadays enjoy, somehow never shows on them. I guess because they are still growing, though research indicates that sooner or later it would show up once they become adults. So, I guess we all need to be careful where our eating habits are concerned.

      And yes, most parents can’t resist the temptation to take a quick bite, especially when their kids are having their snacks, though not realizing the harm it does to them. But I guess it’s just too tempting at times! Ah..that’s a good idea to buy the kids snacks that you don’t like so that you don’t eat them. 🙂

    I could really sense your passion about this area and your desire to educate people, on the dangerous pitfalls of dieting using inappropriate methods.

    Although, I’ve never been on diets as I’m fairly slim, I try to ensure I get an ample amount of exercise. I’m aware that being slim doesn’t in itself equate to being healthy.

    The key thing I learnt from your post is that proper diets do not mean stopping eating of food. If anything, one continues to eat the right foods properly.

    First, let me quickly say, no I have never used any form of these to lose weight. Why? Simply because I don’t need them! Well, by nature I’m just ok and will never border with any of these.

    However, going through you post just gives me the idea of what many people are going through in the name of losing weight. Just think of the idea of purging the food. What kind of weight loss expert recommended such a thing? It’s unimaginable.

    I think this post needs to be featured in all the health and nutrition sites so that more and more people should read it. With this kind of knowledge many will be saved the pain of going through unhealthy practices like these.

  32. At one time in my life, I lost so much weight due to stress that my doctor put me on a strict diet…to gain weight! Now that’s a switch. I had to be just as mindful about my eating habits as those who seek to lose weight. It was life changing to have so much of my attention during the day on food, something I otherwise didn’t think so much about. Great post to help all of us be more mindful of healthy eating habits that become part of the fabric of our lives.

  33. Losing weight is less of a pain than going through the “studies” and “research” on the subject. Nothing can be more confusing than those studies and research. Most of them say, “if you do abc, you will lose weight, but some sudies have also shown that people doing abc are gaining more weight than average”!!!

      Yes indeed, losing weight is easier said than done! And yes, what we read in the research or studies conducted works for some, while for others it’s mostly what suits each one and how much of it can they really follow.

      There is surely no rule that fits everyone. What works for one may not work for the other, in-fact it rarely does. This is because our bodies are different and so are our eating habits, routines, and so may other things. Guess we just need to try what works well for us and follow that, after all the end result is that we need to follow healthy ways to lose weight and not such unhealthy ones – isn’t it?

  34. These are some great points you bring out Harleena about losing weight. I don’t have a weight problem (knock on wood) but my hubby does.

    One thing that i have found with him he always says, I have always had a weight problem. I tell him ” you think and say what you are.” If you think you have a problem your body is going to make sure that you do.

    Like you say watching what you eat and how much you eat with the right exercise makes a world of difference,. And have the right attitude!

    Also with hubby i have went to using smaller plate when we eat. This way he has a smaller amount, but it does not appear that way.

    i do believe that the weight problem can start when we are children. Our parents do teach us our eating habits. to me you eat until you are not hungry any more, not until you are FULL!

      Ah…those surely are words of wisdom that you tell your husband, which are so very true. If we feel and think negative that’s what we really become. But thinking of the positive and making up your mind to do something, makes a world of a difference to your attitude – isn’t it?

      Yes indeed, if we are careful of what we eat, follow a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and generally lead a stress free life, there’s no question that we will put on weight. However, that is easier said than done for some people. 🙂

      I liked the idea of using a smaller plate so that what he eats smaller portions. Another thing that works is that you start cutting down 10% of the food you plan eating daily, though do so gradually. Once you do this, the stomach size also reduces and gets used to demanding lesser food.

      Oh yes! Everything does start from our childhood, though at our times only few parents were really aware of the good or the bad kind of food to offer to their kids. Speaking of myself, my parents never stopped me from eating anything with the belief that you are still growing and need all the food and energy – so eat…which resulted in me putting on weight that becomes tough to shed, till you make sincere efforts. I’m glad am through with all that now. 🙂

    Boy, I could tell the tales of what I’ve done throughout my life to lose weight. I was always about 30 pounds overweight growing up and didn’t actually lose the extra weight until in my mid to late 20’s.

    I’ve kept it off throughout all these years by just choosing a healthier lifestyle although I don’t each as many of the right foods as I should. To me it’s all about the choices we make.

    Losing weight is never fun but the end results are so worth it. I know for a fact that you can still eat anything you want as long as you watch what you eat.

    Great post though and I totally agree with everything you’ve shared here. This should be everyone’s bible when it comes to what they should be doing, the right way!

      I too had a problem of being overweight, and have in-fact been more on the healthy side all through my younger years as well. But yes, as soon as we become aware and read more about the adverse effects of being overweight, it makes sense to do something about it and keep yourself away from health issues that can arise as a result of it – isn’t it?

      You are absolutely right about the choices we make. If we choose to eat the wrong kind of food and lead a sedentary lifestyle, then we shouldn’t expect to remain fit and healthy. But if we choose otherwise and start taking care of things, we do see the changes that show up in our weight and lifestyle.

      We have to be very-very careful about what we eat. And even if we do eat the wrong kind of food occasionally, what matters most is that you burn it off soon enough and not really let it pile or add up. Losing weight does take time and effort, while maintaining the weight is still more tedious. But yes, once you make it a habit, everything falls into place effortlessly.

    Wow, lots to say here. At one point I had a health and wellness blog and I was writing about all the mistake that I see people making with food, especially here in the US.

    I see people skipping meals to make up for the mistakes they make, I see people eating processed food every day… I see people having NO clue what so ever about what’s good for them.

    I agree 100% with you that some diets are totally not healthy and I believe right down dangerous. I think that people in America just don’t know how to eat except for very few, and the whole country need some serious education to be able to recognize what’s “live” food and “dead” food, what helps your body function better and what’s ultimately killing you.

The highest obesity cases are seen there it seems as per research, which I think is due to many reasons again, just like the ones you mentioned. The ready availability of processed food, skipping meals to reduce or following fad diets, leading a sedentary lifestyle are just to mention a few.

      I feel there’s a lack of awareness on the subject, and often times people will just want to do or follow what others are doing, without really realizing what’s good for them. Hope the post helps someone is some ways. 🙂

  37. As they say, Leena, ‘I wrote the book’. I’ve actually just signed a new contract to publish my healthy eating programme I’ve researched and developed. It will help people every where to lose weight without dieting. It promotes and teaches a lifestyle and teaches it from scratch.

    As you said, there’s such a thing as unhealthy dieting. I think most dieting is because they’re not sustainable. And as soon as you stop, your body rages for the fat it’s been missing and you gain more weight than you’ve lost.

  38. First of all my apologies for not having read your last few posts. I’m catching up today and feeling bad that I missed them.
    This post is so relevant and useful. I’ve know people to go in for easy, quick-fix solutions to weight loss. I’m still fighting obesity having given in to bad food habits that started because of poor working hours and continued for a bit. But now I eat healthy for the most part. I’ve also realized the value of walking – not just for the body but also for the mind – I just need to do more of it. In the past I gave up on exercise too easily – now I’m getting much better at it.

      I think most people do try the easy way to reduce weight, and that includes me too! I guess when we hear or read about how people do manage to lose weight the easy way, we don’t really give a deeper thought and just prefer to follow suite.

      I can well relate to the weight gain that occurs when we don’t follow healthy eating habits, which happens with me at times also. Whenever I slacken in the routine or schedule that I normally follow, the weight just comes right back. Yes indeed, eating right and coupled with light exercise helps maintain the weight to it’s optimal limit. Walking is indeed good for the heart as well, and I do get most of my post ideas when I walk. 🙂

However, it really becomes tough for some people with the stressed out life and lifestyles they follow. This leads to some people choosing a quicker way to lose weight by taking up these unhealthy ways, only to realize their mistake later.

      I guess what matters most is that we strike a balance between maintaining a healthy weight and managing the time we have in hand, by taking out some time for ourselves on a daily basis – isn’t it?

  42. When I was in college, I was on an unhealthy diet pattern. I wanted to lose weight desperately and I did try a lot of unhealthy ways of doing that. I stopped eating regularly, started starving myself to extreme limits and even exercised to the point of exhaustion.

    I lost weight, but I lost a lot else along the way. I had terrible hemoglobin levels, I used to faint regularly, suffered terrible hair fall and my skin became very dry somehow. I had lost about 12 kilos in two months and it was the worst thing I could have done to myself. I regret following an unhealthy lifestyle that way. But yes, I am glad I progressed out of it and though I am heavy now, I use healthy ways to shed off the extra weight. I eat a balanced diet, at least I try to and I exercise with a trainer. So, I know my limits and the needs of my body.

    There are a lot of factors that go behind a healthy lifestyle and a good mental framework is just as important. One needs to find that balance because not only does one lose weight but using extreme methods, one might have a lot to lose in the long run.

      Ah…you sound just like most of us who try so many different things in our younger days – I tried that too! I guess we really don’t realize what is healthy or the unhealthy ways to lose weight when we are younger and mostly follow or do what we see people doing – isn’t it? Yes, sometimes these unhealthy ways of losing weight do show good result, but they never last and often cause damage if practiced for long.

      Oh dear! It seemed you did take it to the extreme level where it started affecting your health, which you must have realized only after you followed these ways for a long time. I think initially it all looks nice and you feel good that you are losing weight, but the real affects start showing later, as in your case.

      I’m glad you are now using healthy ways of losing weight, which is what we need to do. I think any form of exercise done for 45 minutes to one hour, along with a well-balanced diet – tones and keeps your body from putting on weight. If one’s on the heavy side, I think eating more of fruits and vegetables in your diet and lessening on the oil, fat, and other things helps additionally.

      Yes indeed, you do need a positive mindset and a will if you want to lose weight the right way, besides leading a healthy lifestyle. And everything does work out if you are really determined and follow a daily routine of exercising and maintaining your weight.

  43. It’s really a lifestyle change to lose weight. Any of the fast gimmicks usually only are short term and may not be healthy for you. I’ve done the starving one for a week but after that got right back to where I was. I had lost weight once by jogging and cutting down on snacks. It worked for a few years. Sometimes your job or significant other can get in the way of making lifestyle changes. Not sure how to overcome those.

      Losing weight should be gradual and slow. It should happen naturally without us having to follow any of these unhealthy ways of losing weight. Anything that quickens up things isn’t natural and will have adverse affects sooner of later.

      Ah…so you too were like Hajra and me, but the weight did come right back – so we are living proof of that. 🙂

      Oh yes! Controlling your intake of oily and fat-foods, accompanied with walks, exercises, and jogging if you are able to do – are just enough to lose weight.But then if we don’t keep doing these on a regular basis, the weight does come back again though that happens slowly, unlike when you follow the unhealthy ways where you gain weight instantly.

      Yes indeed, with life so busy nowadays, getting away or making a routine to exercise and following a healthy lifestyle is tough. But if you really want to lose weight and maintain it, you have to do it at least 5 times a week if not daily. Just like my dad always says – “If you can find time to brush your teeth and have your meals, you can schedule one hour daily for yourself too.” He is one person who keeps pushing me to carry on with mine, though there are days at a stretch when I also get caught up with work and don’t really follow any routine, which starts showing by the weight I start putting on thereafter.

      There are no substitutes I guess and no excuses too 🙂

  44. I totally agree with everything you mentioned in this post. After all, those are counter-productive ways to lose weight with sometimes suspect results. The best way is to lose it gradually by consuming less calories or burning more than usual or a combination of both.

      That’s true. There are many ways to reduce weight that are uneffective or rarely work and we fail to understand that because they are so prevalent. Its a very logical and resonable way to lose weight by keeping the food intake calories less than the energy output, or increasing the later to exceed. A very simple concept actually, but certainly not so easy to implement for many people. But yes, when and if you want to lose weight, you have to do so gradually.
