I hope you didn’t take the title to your heart, but do you know it’s possible to lose you mind?

Come to think of it, is your mind a thing or an object that you can conveniently drop off and pick up any time you like?

Your mind isn’t anything like your temper that you can lose any time, as I don’t think the mind is made up of emotions. Or is it?

But then people also say that you can be as you “make up your mind to be”. This signifies that you can create your own mind!

Some suggest that you should “change your mind” to change yourself or your life. It definitely implies that the form of the mind is moldable.

Besides losing your mind, there are other phrases like, to apply your mind, free your mind, bear in mind, and peace of mind that you frequently use in your daily life.

Interestingly, mind is being referred to differently in all of these phrases.

With so many adages and characteristics attributed, doesn’t the mind seem intriguing enough?

I must say that there’s surely something quite magical about the mind.

Having said all that, I think you’d like to know how to control your mind so you don’t lose it, so as to say.

Well, for that you need to try to understand your mind and unveil its magical power.

Mystery of The Mind

People including philosophers, psychologists, and scientists differ in their definition and explanation of the mind.

Since it is actually a complex and controversial issue, I’m not going to deal with it in depth because there will still be a lot left uncovered. But let me try and explain it the best way I can.

Some consider the mind as a distinct and separate entity, whereas others regard it as a part of the body.

Further, some say that the mind is localized in the brain, while there are some who believe that it’s not assigned to any particular part of the body.

But one thing you can be sure of is that the mind is not the brain, and the brain is not the mind.

However, many people believe that the mind is surely connected and related to the brain in some ways.

What’s your view about the mind?

Generally, people relate the mind to their thoughts and opinions, which are generated from the brain.

On the other hand, some say that the mind is the “consciousness”. Well, consciousness is known as awareness or an alert cognitive state, and some term it as a state of mind.

Many religions have different views about mind and consciousness. Some of them also use the concepts of “soul” and “spirit” to define and differentiate them.

However, I want to be as simple as possible to define the mind, so you can know it better and learn how to control it too.

“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” ~ Buddha

What is the Mind

Going by the present modern day assessment, Wikipedia defines mind as:

The set of cognitive faculties that enables consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, and memory.”

In fact, some consider mind as the seat of the faculty of reason, which is responsible for one’s thoughts and feelings.

If so, then mind would be considered responsible for your intentions, desires, wants, and expectations. It may be defined as a way of thinking and an attitude or outlook of life.

Here’s another popular definition of the mind:

The collective conscious and unconscious processes in a sentient organism that direct and influence mental and physical behavior.

I do believe that the mind is also a collection of different processes of your brain and its form or state depends on the “Self”, which is again the core person that you are.

The mind is a complex process in itself that is in a state of flux, and it can be changed, controlled, and harnessed by yourself.

girls shows mind control on laptop

Actually, I’ll draw an analogy to understand brain, mind and the self.

Consider your brain as the computer (hardware), your mind as the program (software), and the Self as the operator (user).

The mind uses the processes of the brain to carry out various functions of the body as desired by the Self.

As part of its function, the mind also controls the senses.

And, because the senses are sometimes under the influence of external factors and conditions, they in turn impact the mind, and the functions of the body.

The mind is just like software, it has no physical existence. But, it cannot exist without the computer or the brain in the body.

However, the good thing is that you can re-program your mind, and it only requires some skill and effort. Once you do that, you can control your mind and bring it in your favor.

I understand there might be a difference of opinion about this topic and I’d love to know your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

“To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.” ~ Lao Tzu

What Happens When You Lose Your Mind

You feel that you lose your mind when you’re confused and troubled. You either lose touch with the reality of life, or aren’t able to cope with your unrealistic expectations or traumas.

You feel you’re entangled in the web of life, have no control over yourself, and are not able to find any way out.

You lose your mental balance because you lose faith in yourself and your abilities.

Since the mind is continually changing and is unstable in nature, it maintains a very delicate balance between the state of an organized and disorganized brain.

If you lose your mind or if it changes its focus, then various processes of the brain are affected, including perception, thinking, judging, and memory, which might lead to disorientation and disorganization.

Therefore, the personal output and efficiency will be adversely affected.

The person can become depressed, mentally ill, or start behaving in a silly or strange way if the mind loses its orientation and control for a long time.

It is said that losing your mind is close to becoming crazy.  You might do some one-odd crazy act but that doesn’t really make you lose it. 🙂

However, sometimes people use the term “lose your mind” to mean that you should drop off all your worries and tensions, forget yourself, and just enjoy life!

“You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

How to be Yourself and Never Lose Your Mind

Well, it isn’t difficult to remain sane and be yourself.

All it takes is to follow certain principles in life and have requisite qualities in yourself.

• Believe in yourself

• Accept yourself

• Think Positive

• Don’t be judgmental

• Validate before you accept

• Be realistic in expectations

• Think before acting

• Have patience

• Motivate yourself

• Educate and change yourself

• Be focused

• Be fearless and stress free

• Control your mood and temper

• Let go!

This is only a part of the magic potion your need to get hold of yourself.

>> Transform Your Life to Be Happy in 17 Simple Steps

I’d suggest you read the above post and know all these points in detail.

One thing that will help you live a happy life is to get control of your mind, because that alone will take care of most of the above mentioned qualities.

Sometime you need not control your mind, especially if you’re a creative person or involved in a creative process. But you still need to define its limits.

However, as it is, controlling the mind does not mean that you stop living freely and make your life dull.

It’s about making optimum use of yourself and your life, and back it up with the power of your mind.

“A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others, is stronger than any physical force in the universe.” ~ Wayne Dyer

What Is the Need to Control Your Mind

Your mind is quite powerful, whether you control it or even otherwise. It has the capability to learn and develop on its own.

The mind feeds itself with all the internal and external information you directly or indirectly provide it with.

Even a little child has a mind of his or her own. The child gets deeply associated and involved with the developing mind, and begins to believe and obey it.

If ever asked, the child says he or she will do what the mind says. Not to mention, the adults also do that!

In most of the cases, your mind loves to indulge in the senses, derive pleasure, make least efforts, resist change, and remain in a state of inertia.

This is the state when you can say that your mind is working on its own, and rules over YOU. And we make the mistake of equating and identifying mind with the “Self”.

It’s a lot like the situation where you’re the President of your country, but the government doesn’t obey you and prefers working on its own whims and fancies.

Can such a government or a person ruled by the mind ever be successful? I don’t think so.

To be happy and successful, you need to control your mind like an ideal operator. You need to keep it within limits and make it obey your orders, and work as per your instructions.

horse jockey shows how to control your mind

The mind is like a wild horse. It is very powerful, but to use that power, you got to tame it. Control it with the reins, and teach it to be calm and silent.

Don’t let the mind take you for a ride, instead put a saddle on it and ride it towards the direction you want to go.

Remember that great saints and people have blamed an uncontrolled mind for the sufferings in your life.

“All problems are illusions of the mind.” ~ Eckhart Tolle

You’ll never lose your mind if you’ve control over it. You’ll always remain sane, oriented, and organized if you know the techniques to control your mind.

The mind is not bad or useless. It performs useful functions that are essential for your day-to-day living as well as to be successful.

It just has a wild nature and likes to be free and uncontrolled, and makes you do the wrong things.

All you need to do is educate your mind continuously and constantly.

Make your mind your best friend, and you will never fail to achieve happiness and success.

In my future posts about the mind, you’ll know how to do that.

Till then, don’t lose your mind and keep it intact. 🙂

“Most people believe the mind to be a mirror, more or less accurately reflecting the world outside them, not realizing on the contrary that the mind is itself the principal element of creation.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

  1. Very interesting read of the mind. I believe that the world is a reflection of our minds; we put out what we are thinking. And it is a very fertile garden which would reap whatever we sow and thus it is very important to know what we are sowing everyday, which are our thoughts: positive or negative, good or bad, the mind will take it all. We must choose carefully because as William Ernest Henley wrote in his poem, ” … I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” It all starts with the thoughts in our mind.

  2. Hi Harleena,

This is an interesting read. I was attracted to the topic as some of my friends may thought that I have lost my mind! Just joking! I am talking about I have been so willing to give up some of my favourite activities for the longer term vision that I have 🙂

“You lose your mental balance because you lose faith in yourself and your abilities.” What an insightful observation! While I absolutely believe that we have our own unique talents and strengths, some people may always be looking for solutions outside themselves. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for coaching and mentoring, especially in network marketing. However, we have to recognise our own greatness in order to be able to take away the mental blockage first! Have faith, Be authentic. Or else, there will always be self-sabotage!!

  3. Hi Harleena,

I finally made it by, sorry for my tardiness.

When I read your header and then started reading your post the thing that came to my mind were Alzheimer’s patients. I’ve never known anyone outside of someone who had this horrible disease to ever lose their minds. My sister-in-law’s mother had Alzheimer’s and she passed away this past April. It was horrible to see this once very active woman lost inside her own body not having a clue who we were or even speaking at all.

Back to the topic at hand, as always I love what you shared and your suggestions on how to never lose our minds. What I’ve found to work best for me is to stay in the present moment. Not let my mind wander too much and of course worry about things we have no control over.

Now I’ll admit that I’m not being very successful this month. As you know I lost my best friend and my mind wanders a lot to him. I’m having more good days then bad but my emotions are still on a roller coaster. This too shall pass though.

You always share so many wonderful and enlightening posts on great topics Harleena so thank you for that and for making us think.

    Hope you enjoyed your weekend.

    ~Adrienne

  4. Hey Harleena,

This is a deep topic and I’m pretty confused of what the mind is LOL… Since I’m also a computer tech, I got a good understand when you use the example of the mind being the software. But there are so many different opinions of what it is that I don’t think it can be defined, but you can definitely control it I believe.

It’s like having a car. You have your destinations and in order for you to get there safely and in tact, you have to drive within the lanes and use both defensive and offensive driving. You are the mind of the car and it’s up to you on how you drive it. Also you can use other means to get to your destination as well. This is how I view the mind. It’s separate from the brain and the body, but you get to choose how to use it.

Once again the mind is a very complex topic, but this is my understanding about it so far LOL

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Research has shown that the heart actually sends more messages to the brain than the brain sends to the heart and profoundly influences the way we perceive and respond to the world. When under stress, the heart sends a chaotic, disordered rhythm to the brain which affects mental clarity,decision-making,emotional balance, personal effectiveness and creativity.

The good news is that the emotional system can be developed by learning how to generate a coherent heart rhythm as research by The Institute of HeartMath has shown. IHM has developed various easy to learn tools and techniques promoting increased physiological efficiency, mental acuity and emotional stability.

  6. The human brain is amazing — the more we learn, the more we don’t know. It’s so awesome …

  7. Hi Harleena.

First of all i want to appreciate your effort that you’ve discussed a great topic with us. It’s interesting to read it.

Well, I think mind is like a knife. If we use it positively, sensibly and just for the purpose, It could be useful for us and if we use it negatively, it could be harmful for us.

Mostly I lose my mind and i get angry whenever someone touch my personal things But I’ve a good habit that i can control my mind and aggression.
Mostly people do a lot of things after losing mind and sometimes we have to repent after doing anything wrong. I think the best way for them is to think about the result of your action before doing it!

One thing i also want to tell, Doctors say that : ” If you can’t control your aggression, Just close your eyes and lie on bed ”
    Thanks

  8. Hello Harleena,

In everyone’s life losing control over mind happens sometime. You are right mind can be compared with brain. It is interlinked with each other. We need to increase our controlling power. To take any steps, we must think it deeply its future consequences whether it will be good or bad.

Anyway well described article on checking our mind 🙂

    1. Hi Ahsan,

We all face some mental or emotional problems in our life, and sometime the situation goes out of control, making us feel that we’ve lost our mind.

It helps if we learn to control our emotions as well as thoughts. Keeping a check as you’ve suggested would certainly help to control the mind.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and views. 🙂

  9. Most people feel like they are losing their mind when they cannot control obsessive thoughts. Often this problem is not one of the mind, but emotion – fear and anxiety. It can be helpful to actually “lose your mind and come to your senses,” by doing something sensual and soothing to the body, like swaddling yourself in a blanket, lying in the grass, walking on the beach. Another tip is to do very focused work, like balancing your checkbook. Having a good cry can release mental business, too. Listen to some evocative music, and/or seek comfort from a trusted friend or counselor.

    Darlene Lancer

    1. Hi Darlene,

      Welcome to the blog!

You’re absolutely right that many a times the feeling of losing the mind is due to an emotional issue or trauma, other than due to the lack of control of thoughts.

Fear and anxiety are the causes of stress, but if they go out of bounds and are uncontrollable, give a feeling of losing the mind – that is when you need to come to your senses.

Like stated in the comment above, the failure of common sense and the ability of make judgement too creates illusion in the mind and disorients the person.

Your tips and suggestions are really helpful, and in fact I mentioned some of these in my recent post on seeking relief from stress. You can use your senses in various ways to calm your mind.

And of course, you need to keep your mind engaged and you’ve suggested some good ways to do so.

Thanks for sharing your expert advice and contributing to the post. I really appreciate it and hope to see you around. 🙂

  10. Hi, Harleena mam,

    Totally mind blowing post. 🙂

Every people have different level of evolution so has a different level of thinking as you have mentioned philosophers, psychologists, and scientists differ in their definition. Their definition varies on thinking. Isn’t it?

I think, Mind is our common sense and Brain is what understand situations and then act according to it. 🙂
Though, they are interconnected and have co-existence.

I agree with your analogy “Consider your brain as the computer (hardware), your mind as the program (software), and the Self as the operator (user).”

Sometimes, some situation comes that make us go crazy. Here we lose our mind. That time we unable to understand what is wrong and what is right. 🙁
It is nothing but losing our temper and common sense. We can maintain a good mind by applying the points that you have mentioned, like to think positive, be motivated, have patience and etc.

There is no hardware mended in the world which is autonomous and go with no software. For maintaining, happy, sound and robust life we have to integrate both mind and brain.

Indeed, Great post once again. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

    1. Hi Kumar Chandan,

I’m glad you like the post.

Yes, definitely, everyone is unique in terms of personality and other particulars. The thinking ability and capacity too varies from person to person. Our observations, interpretations, and inferences too could be different, because they pass through our mind, which depends on our evolution, subjective experience, and exposure to environment.

If you define mind as common sense, it still remains constituted of mainly thoughts and mental processes. Brain has the tools and equipment to carry out the instructions in the physical sense.

You’re right that we lose the sense of judgment when we’re troubled with mental or emotional problems, and with added disorientation it seems like we’ve lost our mind. The common sense fails.

Yes, I agree that all hardware need a software. So, the brain needs a mind, and the body needs a soul? 🙂

Thanks for the interesting insights and contribution to the post. I appreciate it. 🙂

  11. Love the title of this post, Harleena. Actually I like the post itself.

I do believe that the mind is in the brain. Not any where else.
Yes, it is important to learn to control your mind. Actions come from the mind. So if you get angry you have to know how to control that anger.
Happiness is in the mind, so if you want to find it let your mind know that you like yourself and love your life. Concentrate on the positive in life.

We are who we are because of what the mind gets feed and our reaction to it.

I do love the way you refer to the mind as a wild horse. This is very true. Take a child for example. They have to be tamed in many ways. They have to learn not to throw fits when thing don’t go there way.

Any way thanks for making me think.
    Hugs,
    Debbie

    1. Hi Debbie,

You’re one of the few ones that loved the title! 🙂 I’m glad you like the post as well.

I believe that the mind is linked to the brain, and inferring from its nature, it is most likely that it resides in the brain, as we consider the soul to be seated in the heart.

Come to think of it, every thing depends on our mind – our thoughts, words, and actions. So, it is wise to control it as you suggest, and develop it.

I agree with you that happiness is a state of mind. One would definitely achieve it if he or she follows your suggestions of loving yourself and your life, besides being always positive.

In one of the replies to the comments, I’ve mentioned about the feral children, and that really shows how important the environment and its interactions are to the mind.

In India, the mind is termed as a monkey that keeps running and jumping around. If you’re successful in keeping it stationary and tame it to obey your instructions, you can do what you want!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your wisdom. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  12. Yet again an astonished and powerful write up from a great mind. I was reading this and was enjoying every bit of the lines. We all need to know that we have the power over our minds, not matter how tight or hard it may be… Thanks for the good information.

    1. Hi Asaolu,

Thanks for the words of appreciation. I’m humbled. 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Yes, indeed we’ve the power to control and use our mind to achieve excellence and be happy. I hope the information helps you. 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  13. Hi Harleena,

Staying and keeping to your regret(s) at whatsoever is one way to loosing one’s mind, and it’s effect can be disastrous.

The mind takes time to heal when hurt, careful attention should be made on what comes in either through visual or audio contact.

    Great motivational post.

    1. Hi Dare Khuji,

      Welcome to the blog!

I agree that keeping and living with your regrets is like breeding negativity within you that does not help at all, and could lead to losing one’s mind if the repercussions go out of hand and mind.

Yes, you’re right that mind takes time to adjust or heal. We need to be careful with regards to its treatment and about the environment that we provide it with.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  14. I totally with you in all the points mentioned above. But this is for normal human beings those who had done good things in previous births.
But I tell one different story here.

Your brain activities totally depends on four things.
1.Good and bad things you had done in your previous births.
2.Good and bad things done by your fore fathers.
    3.Vaasthu of your house.
    4.Your horoscope.

So based on the above 4 factors only your birth was designed by the God. You can’t change these things overnight. By doing good things again and again you can just wiped out your sins. It will automatically reflects in your life. Then you starts thinking like normal person.
    The good example is me.

Yes, now I tell one story about my personal life. I had done so many bad things in my previous birth. Because of that I faced lot of problems in my life now. For example, I rented one tenant in my house. He vacated the house last may 2012. But what happen before that he filed a suit against my father. Not to vacate him without court order. He suddenly came one day in December 2012 and he broke the door lock and enter the vacant house. He came with some advocates for this purpose. I don’t know what to do on that time. But policemen curse me for not putting good costly lock for the doors. I had spent more than 5,00,000 for this reason. Then went to some devotional persons from Himalayas. They gave some tips to wipe out the sins which i had in previous birth. I follow all the steps told by them. You believe it or not. Then my brain starts working like a normal human being. Infact I won that case filed in court. All good things happening now. You believe it or not. I am always mentally tough to face any challenge in my life. But that time my fate totally changed my brain of using correct things. So now you understand. What is behind of using your brain normally.

    1. Hi Kumar,

Thanks for sharing your information and knowledge. Here we’ve been discussing about the mind, and it’s okay if you consider the mind and the brain as one and the same.

Though I don’t refute the validity of your suggestions, I’d prefer to stick to this life and our personal conditions and qualities to deal with the issue of the mind and its issues or development.

I agree on that we should do good things in life and that helps you and the world.

I’m glad you were able to resolve your house issue and that all good things are happening to you now.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  15. My Hair have turned grey due to my UN-predictable behavior. I loose my cool pretty often.. I am out of my mind..

Amazing post. Will take few pointers from it and start to implement them..

    Cheers

    1. Hi Morris,

Welcome to the blog! I’m sorry about what you’re undergoing. I hope this post helps you. We can change and achieve whatever by controlling and understanding our mind. 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  16. Very thought-provoking post, Harleena!

It really made me sit down and think about how I perceive the mind and whether I’m taking action to keep my own mind at peace and under control.

To me, the mind is that which contains the acknowledgement of existence, which is the self with no ego involved. You feel so free and peaceful when you clear your thoughts and just sit and be. I’ve been focusing on doing this for at least 10 minutes a day with some meditation, and it really recharges my mind.

As always, I really love the quotes you use. I appreciate how you structure your posts as it really helps me absorb all of the information! Thank you for these wonderful, mindful tips, and may you have a lovely rest of the week 🙂

    Warm regards,
    Kalina

    1. Hi Kalina,

Thanks for the appreciation and for liking this post. If it has been able to stir the thoughts in your mind and inspire you, then I believe my efforts have been paid off.

Our mind actually deserves more attention than we give it, as it can really be the game changer if we make its full use in the right manner.

We all do have our differences in the understanding and interpretation of the concepts of the mind and the self. But what really matters are our actions and the end result.

Practising meditation and achieving a free and peaceful mind is really great, and it’s good that you do it on a daily basis.

Thanks for your feedback and sharing of your of your thoughts and ways to implement them. It’ll help my blog readers and I really appreciate it. 🙂

      1. We certainly don’t give it enough attention. Imagine the power we’d have if we took care of ourselves physically and mentally.

Have a lovely weekend, Harleena! I’m finally moved into my college dorm, so now the first weekend awaits me (:

        1. And those who do that are really successful. Look at all those successful people – they not only have sharp minds, but they’ve good control our their minds, besides having strong self-belief, self-esteem, and self-confidence.

Believe, and the world is yours! Wish you all the best for your first weekend in the college dorm. 🙂

  17. Harleena,

This is my fave post of yours yet! A perfect end to my day. You have tackled a huge subject and made it simple and readable.

With students returning to the classroom in the morning, my mind has been on kaleidoscope mode. This is great when I am planning, in a meeting, or being creative. This is the pits when I am trying to get ready for sleep.

I loved the Tolle quote. When we stand back and look at the thinking we are doing, we can realize what a runaway horse it is.

I’m going to settle right in on that thought.

I’m so very glad to have found your website. Twitter is awesome! I’m tweeting this!

    xo Karen

    1. Hi Karen,

Thanks for your compliment and I’m glad you like the post.

Talks and information about the mind is really refreshing and recharging. Every time we learn new ways to either tackle or leverage our mind helps us to excel in whatever we do.

The mind really creates the problems and solutions based on the information it extracts or is fed in with the senses, and the knowledge and experience it gains with exposure.

We all have tamed this wild horse to some extent, but winning a race needs more preparation and requires the best rapport between and combination of the horse and the jockey!

Thanks for tweeting this post and thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and experiences in this post. They are valuable and I really appreciate them. See you around. 🙂

  18. Hi Harleena,

Ah, the mind is a vast topic, and let’s not forget that we have a “conscious mind” that guides our day to day thoughts, and actions, and our “subconscious mind”, also called “unconscious mind” which is responsible for much of our behaviors, results, and all our automatic mechanism like driving a car, and controlling our heart beat for example.

The mind is a vast subject and such a fascinating thing. The reason many people visualize the mind in the head is because it’s related to our thoughts which take place in our brain, so in the way we can say that our mind is related to our brain more than any other part of of our body.

We also talk about our collective mind, which is the ensemble of the world vibrations that at time tends to go in a certain direction and this becomes obvious when you watch some trends of the world.

Thanks you for the great explanation of the mind.

    1. Hi Sylviane,

The mind is your topic and domain for a long time and your expert views are very welcome. Yes, indeed we can go on discussing and talking about the mind endlessly, it is such a fascinating subject.

Thanks for making the distinction between the conscious and subconscious mind, which is so important to know. I just mentioned in the comment above how powerful the subconscious is, and how useful it can be if we can leverage it in the right way.

I believe mind is all made up of thoughts and mental processes. I’d say that the mind rules over us as it rules the most important part of our body, the brain.

I’ve heard about the talk of collective mind and consciousness by some psychologists and religious leaders too, and it is interesting. May be someday you can come over to my blog and talk about that! 🙂

Thank you for stopping by and contributing to the post. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  19. Harleena-The mind is a wonderful tool if we use it properly. I try using visualization and it helps me to control my mind. If you smile it will also help your mood and keep the mind from losing control. I see everything we put into our minds like our thoughts, different events, people we encounter, ciscumstances and things unravel in our brain. Our thoughts that we hold in your mind are energetic frequencies that you are constantly emitting and also receiving, so transforming your thoughts in positives will help your mind stay consistenct.

I also feel the mind is divided into two segments. One being the conscious mind and the other subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is so powerful that if you use it in a powerful manner you can heal your mind and soul. So we need to funnel in our mind good thoughts

    1. Hi Arleen,

I totally agree that the mind is a great tool that helps us in our personal development.

There are many methods and techniques to either control or harness the mind, and among them visualization is really effective and helpful.

Our thoughts mostly make up our mind, so it is essential to have the best and good thoughts to have the best and a good mind. Positive thoughts definitely carry with them positive energy that helps us immensely.

Yes, much part of the mind remains at the subconscious level, which is really very powerful as you mention. The trick is to use your conscious mind to leverage the power of the subconscious and make things easy for you.

These are really great thoughts and views. Thanks for sharing them with all of us. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  20. A controversial topic you got here, Harleena 😀

I have no idea where I stand, but I suppose I can add a few thoughts.

I think it is hard to define mind, because we are shaped by our surroundings/environment. Who we are, the ideas we learn and everything we know and love comes through our life experience.

I think to truly define mind, we must conduct an experiment: to bring up a human child in the wild (I mean, with no another human contact). But, unfortunately we can’t, since it isn’t ethical (how do we define ethics? Are we, as a society ethical?)

As with taming mind, I partially agree with the thought. I am kind of a philosophy follower, so I also like the idea of letting our mind go – running it free in the wild. See how it is. Experience it.

A part of me likes to think that we all live in a illusion – forgetting the real truths of life and focusing on unnecessary things (It could be true, especially considering that the masses tend to ignore the real truths, such as how many people are suffering out there).

Another part of my mind thinks that we who claim to be normal members of this society are the ones who are truly crazy (ones who has lost their minds).

Anyways, great thoughts, Harleena 😀 Gave me a lot to think about 🙂

By the way, how is life? I haven’t been blogging for almost an year now; it is good to be back 😀

    1. Hi Jeevan,

Welcome to the blog after a long time! I’m sure you’re all recharged now and I wish you all the success in your second innings of blogging. 🙂

Yes, it’s a controversial topic, if you think so, but moreso, it’s a very complex one. Any input in form of thoughts and experiences are welcome. 🙂

I agree it’s hard to define the mind, as our subjectivity brings out different perspectives, and as you mention, our interpretation also depends hugely on our environment and bringing up.

You’re right that our life experiences really shape our thoughts and the concept we’ve of ourselves. This includes the information, knowledge and education that we attain in our life. Every life experience involves the brain, mind, and the self. Our mind greatly contributes to what and who we are.

You don’t need to conduct the experiment of bringing up a human child in the wild, like Mowgli in Rudyard Kipling’s “The jungle book” because there are such cases in reality, and such children are called feral children, which you can look up on the Wikipedia too. Most of such children picked up the habits and traits of the animals they used to live with, and were not able to talk in the human ways even after being brought back to the human world – their mind remained primitive and animal-like.

Such cases prove how much our minds are affected by the surroundings and environment. The mind uses the brain faculties as it is trained to do so.

Talking about letting our mind go – we need to learn from the experience of others, and you can read Mayura’s comment above and my reply too. I guess you’re partly right that we do not live “fully” and “really” because we’re either trained, bound, or forced to live confined to situations and conditions that do not rise above the level of day-to-day problems.

There’s so much in store in-depth in the four lettered word mind, and that’s why I thought best to make it a new category on my blog. Look forward to your views and reactions to those in the future. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your helpful thoughts, ideas, and views on this topic. I very much appreciate it. 🙂

      1. Sorry about the late reply, I didn’t get the reply notification email (I am not getting any notifications from your blog, is the plugin working for everyone else?).

I suppose it is okay. Why should anyone want to live like the rest of us? Sure, we have all sorts of luxuries, but I think it’s better to live in a world like that – not knowing the cruelty of mankind (we are the most intelligent species on the planet, but are we behaving intelligently?).

What is losing the mind anyways? Perhaps that offers us real freedom – the truth; perhaps it allows us to see the world for what it really is.

No problem, Harleena 🙂 Great topic anyways!

  21. Gosh, Harleena – this is such a huge, mind-blowing topic, (if you’ll excuse the pun!) that I don’t know where to start.

When I first read your analogy of the computer and software, I thought yes, that’s right – but then, I’m not so sure it’s possible to draw such a clear distinction between mind and self. Because in a way, we are our minds, aren’t we?

Having worked in mental health for most of my life, I’m acutely aware how complex the mind is – and the brain – and there’s a lot we don’t understand. For example, the extent to which some mental disturbances or personality traits are related to physical changes in the brain, because there’s some evidence for that. Though it can work both ways – things like practising relaxation and meditation can actually bring about changes in our brains. So I don’t think we can talk about ‘mind’ in isolation from the body – they’re inextricably linked.

I think the best way to gain control over one’s mind is to practice mindfulness, through meditation and contemplation. We lose control of our minds when we lack awareness and wander through life like sleep-walkers, tugged this way and that by conditioned responses, prejudices and irrational, damaging emotions.

    Awareness is the key.

There’s so much more to say about this, Harleena, but I’m going to leave it there – it’s such a complex subject, and I hope my comments make some sense.

Thanks for a very interesting and challenging post, which has given us all lots of food for thought,

    Sue

    1. Hi Sue,

I agree this is really a vast topic, which seems to have no end or start. Mind is the final frontier, if you want to improve yourself and your life.

Well, as I explained in some of the replies to comments, mind is a greatly misunderstood concept. It is often confused with the brain and the self.

Okay let me try to explain using examples. As a person you are aware of yourself. With time your thoughts change, and so do your values, and various concepts. You say that your mind has changed. But your awareness of yourself doesn’t change. This is the consciousness that runs in the background, until you make the efforts to bring it in the foreground.

We’re our minds, until we don’t experience our Self – one apparent difference between these two is that the mind is ever changing and has temporary states, while the Self is permanent. You may change your clothes or the way you wear the clothes, but the body remains the same.

In simple ways we can say that it is easier to change our minds than change our self, isn’t it? But I honor the knowledge and experience that you’ve gained through your professional job and exposure. I agree that there’s a lot we don’t understand.

It’s interesting to know that changes in mental states and personality traits can cause physical changes in the brain. And of course, if certain part of the brain is damaged, then it will have an impact on your mental functions. So I agree that there exists a connection between the mind and the brain.

I think you’ve got all your basics right when it comes to gaining control over your mind – creating awareness through mindfulness and meditation; these are the essential key elements or methods.

I agree that lack of awareness or consciousness makes us suffer and stops us from gaining a better understanding of life and ways to make it better. That is why I suggest to strengthen your Self, which will help you raise the level of your awareness and then you can change and control your mind, which is basically all about the mental processes.

Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge and experience and taking this discussion to a higher level. The mind is a complex subject and you’ve contributed in a better way to make it simpler. I really appreciate it. 🙂

      1. Mmm…. – Thanks for your detailed reply, Harleena. I think I see what you’re getting at. I just don’t think it’s so easy to separate the mind from the ‘self’ and I’m not sure I grasp the idea of the self as something permanent and unchanging, because I think we’re changing all the time. Both ‘mind’ and ‘self’ are concepts, and I think we could debate for ever and a day without ever coming up with agreed definitions for either of them!

Sorry if I seem very stupid about this!

We need a PhD to sort this one out 🙂

        Sue

        1. No, you’ve been very sensible. I agree that this is a topic that we can go on debating, and never reach a conclusion. But I think that isn’t necessary, because what’s essential is that we just learn the ways to control our mind and really practice that. And, the ways you’ve mentioned for that are simply great!

I was trying to get on to the concept of an absolute self, but I think that becomes too philosophical and theoretical at this stage. But I respect your suggestion and we better leave it to the people with PhDs to deal with these concepts. 🙂

Nevertheless, thanks a lot for putting across your point of view, which does help. 🙂

  22. Excellent topic on the mind but difficult to understand. I think many people have tried to understand the mind but have failed.

I could be wrong but Einstein’s brain was pickled to understand the nature of his brain as to why he was so brainy.

I agree with you that the brain is like a wild horse, running wild and making you crazy.

I like your suggestions to keep yourself intact from not loosing your mind. Will practice some of them.

    Thanks Harleena

    1. Hi Shalu,

You’re absolutely correct that the mind is definitely very difficult to understand and control. But it’s not impossible and one should make such efforts as that helps improve the quality of life.

Well, as I pointed out in the post, the mind is greatly misunderstood and often taken as the brain or the self. However, in reality it is a distinct entity.

I was talking about the mind as the wild horse, or you can say a monkey, as often referred to as in the Indian context.

We can all try to make the best use of our minds, and that definitely requires to keep it under control and make it follow our instructions.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and views. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  23. Hi Harleena,

I love the title of this post and it’s pretty attractive 😉

I was curious about mind since I got to know that mind isn’t brain. As a kid, I thought mind was brain. But as I read and grasp more knowledge about it, my perceptions were changed.

There were different kind of definitions in this matter. Mostly I was exposed to scientific ones and others were religious. Personally, I don’t believe there will be a perfect scientific definition. Yet, some of the brain functions are mysterious too.

Anyway, instead of worrying too much about the mysteries, it’s wise enough to do what we can while we can, no? 🙂

Keeping a healthy state of mind is getting quite harder in the background we are living, but it’s not impossible. I think that’s why now people are more interested in taking control of their state of mind and digging into the bottom of it.

May be it’s me, but I find some educated personalities are acting like they lost their mind Harleena 🙂 But when I really get to know them, I had to take my point back knowing them nice enough to claim so. We can’t really point our fingers to someone looks like he lost his mind and claim so, nah? Sometimes we just tend to judge by the cover.

I like your analogy which considered mind as the software 🙂 Brain has same old states, but mind has different kind of states like software upgrades. It’s that flexible 😉

I totally agree with taking control of our minds Harleena. Even if the person is a creative. You know, while being creative, you can follow it all the ways and push the limits to seek the utmost creativeness. But when you turn around, it could be too late and your brain and body might find it too much to take.

I’m just imagining it as I’m familiar with an incident about a person who lost his mind and end up taking medications. I think we shouldn’t pursue too much unless we know how to do it very well 🙂 Practicing different types of meditation is a great way I believe.

Hope you are having a lovely week Harleena 🙂

    Cheers…

    1. Hi Mayura,

Gosh, I’m glad you’re not offended by the title! 😉

You believe that the mind isn’t the brain? I’ve met many who don’t think so, and they even say that the mind is the Self. So, mind is largely a misunderstood concept that requires standardization and clarity.

You remark that your perceptions changed, and this changes your mind, your outlook, and thinking, while your brain and the Self remain the same. I believe that with time there will be a perfect scientific definition of mind, because it is a great tool with many scientific uses in the near future. As you might’ve heard about gadgets and technology being planned that will be operated with the help of your mind!

That makes “thoughts” the basic and essential criteria of the mind. If we want to keep a healthy state of mind, we need to have healthy and positive thoughts in the mind. Mind can be controlled by regulations of our thoughts.

Of course we can’t judge anybody just by the looks and decide if the person has lost his or her mind. Repeated action and behavior that is unusual or weird can certainly give us a reason to doubt the integrity of the mind of the person. But not conclusively still.

You’re right that mind is very flexible and it’s constantly learning and developing, through our efforts and on its own too. And like you say, it can be upgraded any time just like the computer software!

You do understand the seriousness of keeping the mind under limits. The world has witnessed many a philosophers and artists who’ve lost their mind in their attempt to go beyond. However, that does not mean that one should not try that, it’s just that one should be prepared with the right skills and techniques.

Meditation is truly a great way to develop and strengthen your mind. I’m happy to know that you’ve such knowledge and understanding.

Thanks for your valuable contribution to this post and a great discussion that is rich in knowledge and experience, which I’m sure will help others understand the mind better. I appreciate your time and effort spent on this visit. 🙂

  24. Yes, the mind is very powerful!

On one hand my mind has happy thoughts of travel and excitement. But, to the opposite extreme my mind keeps me up at night as I worry about problems.

I really want to learn to foster positive thoughts, but also quiet my mind through meditation. Sometimes it feels like it’s on overload.. and it needs a break too!

Thanks for this post, really great points!!!!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Mind is like a roller coaster, isn’t it? Takes you on a ride through the extremes and the highs and lows. There are some people who really get addicted to this kind of ride or surrender to be taken for a ride, even if they suffer doing so.

You’ve chosen to take charge of your mind and not suffer more, and that’s a great decision. You know how to do that, and I’m sure you’ll be getting down to doing it. Meditation and positive thoughts will surely help you quieten your mind, never let it overload itself, and give you the much needed break – and a peace of mind! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and for sharing your personal thoughts and experiences. I appreciate it. 🙂

  25. Great Post 🙂 Like always absolutely amazing post! Things become overwhelming and we feel out of control. We do not do our ‘normal’ things and we can do some very unusual things for ourselves.

    1. Hi Anisha,

Welcome to the blog! I’m glad you liked the post.

Yes, our mind can get disturbed and can lead us to create more disturbances. That makes it important to take care of our mind.

      Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  26. Hello Harleena,

I come to understand that our mind is a totally different person from us. s/he can play tricks on us if we are not careful (just saying) :).

We are controlled by our mind (consciously or subconsciously). At times i do have some old memory (bad and good) lingering my head and that signifies mind, right? So yeah, we do lost our mind from time to time 🙂

Nice article indeed, do have a do have a free mind this week my friend 🙂

    1. Hi Babanature,

Yes, mind can surely play its tricks and catch us unaware if we underestimate it.

Most of us are creatures of our mind, and you’re right in that more than the conscious, the mind rules us from the subconscious.

Yes, that’s the mind playing the past memories in your head. And, we do lose our mind at times, but that’s for really short periods.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and views on the topic, and wish you too have a mindful week ahead! 🙂

  27. You do have a way of twisting your topics to suit me. Yea! i said me. When i first saw your headline, i was like what does she mean by”Have you lost your mind”? When i took a tour around the post and finally it more attention, i came to understand the fact that you are just an awesome writer. Thanks. The mind is one “guy”(thats what i call it) that is just calm but very effective. If you can control it, then you will win. But if you can’t. Really don’t know what will be the case. Thanks for sharing the post. You deserve my like on facebook. kudon

    1. Hi Robinson,

I’m happy that you found the post to be a good read. I’m also glad that the post title didn’t deter you from reading this post. 😉

You got the crux of the post in your two sentences – it’s all about controlling your mind. The better you’re at it, the happier and successful you might be.

Thanks for your visit and for the words of appreciation. 🙂

  28. Hi Harleena,

I think the mind is a powerful thing. I personally have had trouble with my mind because if I allow it to, it can think up some crazy thoughts and it frightens me. Nothing like me hurting someone but my family getting hurt someway or just something terrible like that.

Ever since my struggle with depression I have to fall asleep with the TV on. When my husband asks me why I have to have it on, I always reply “I can’t be alone with my thoughts”…they can get way out there. This is why I have to stay in control of my mind.

If anything can make me lose my mind it could be traumatic experience. I also think if we keep positive thoughts and surroundings our mind can be at peace and won’t wander off. At least that works for me :).

Great post Harleena! Hope you’re having a great week!

    1. Hi Corina,

Mind is for sure powerful, but we should constantly remind ourselves that we or the “Self” is more powerful, and has an edge over the mind. All you need is self-belief, and some courage.

You should also practice daily to control your thoughts, and there are many types of meditation just for that purpose. Prayers also help to strengthen our inner being, which in return lends us the power to cope with the problems.

Once you strongly believe in yourself, have faith in the almighty, and are prepared with tools to tackle thoughts, you can set out to conquer your mind.

I’d personally suggest you to practice to observe your breath and try to be in the moment – that takes care of all thoughts and problems; nothing can be simpler than this.

However, it’s easier said than done, and the feat of being in the moment ironically takes lot of effort and time to achieve.

Having weird thoughts is a normal phenomena and happens with most people, but you can scale and tone them down by engaging your mind in useful and positive tasks. There are various other ways and techniques that help to deal with the negative thoughts.

I can very well understand your mind and situation as I and some of my dear ones have undergone sort of similar conditions. You already know how to work yourself out of the problems by being positive, and that’s great!

I’m sure you’re going to like the future posts on this new category on my blog. 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experiences and thoughts that has added practical value for other readers as well. I very much appreciate it. 🙂

  29. Harleena, I think we go through periods in our lives when we do lose our minds. Things become overwhelming and we feel out of control. We do not do our ‘normal’ things and we can do some very unusual things for ourselves. I loved the quote “All problems are illusions of the mind.” ~ Eckhart Tolle.

Another thought provoking post Harleena, have a wonderful day ahead!

    1. Hi Lisa,

Oh yes, you’re right. It probably happens with us and everyone that we lose our minds for some or the other things in life. It’s a period when our thinking, decision and judgement making ability, and reasoning fail and we feel completely disoriented.

A person doing an unusual thing can be called as having lost his or her mind, and even a person losing the mind can indulge in really abnormal and unusual things.

If your mind is stable, sober, and sane, then you’ll probably be able to deal with all the problems of life.

Thanks for stopping by and contributing your thoughts and views to the post. I appreciate it. 🙂

  30. Hi Harleena !

Sometimes, it can be difficult to keep our mind in control, it can break relationships as we can throw any words from our mouth hence, to avoid this.. we all human beings should follow the tips you’ve mentioned. I don’t see much better suggestions/tips than the one’s you’ve mentioned. Excellent tips. Thanks for sharing the information.

    -Pramod

    1. Hi Pramod,

Yes, you’re absolutely right that it is not easy to control your mind. In fact, it is one of the most difficult tasks for anyone.

Mind can lead to problems, in personal life as well as in interpersonal relationships if it is not educated and trained well.

I’m glad you like the tips and hope you’ll be able to benefit from them.

Thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  31. I find this topic very interesting. I’ll look forward to your other posts in this topic. I think you’ve explained it very well. I haven’t seen it put like this before.

    1. Hi Anne,

Glad you find the topic interesting. Anything about mind is interesting because we can personally relate to it and get to know new things that can help us.

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. 🙂

  32. Hi Harleena!

Like always absolutely amazing post! Loved the line “is your mind a thing or an object that you can conveniently drop off and pick up any time you like?” Why not tweet it? It’s a thought provoking question and a funny one.

Mind, I believe, is part of body so losing it, literally or figuratively, would cause much problems. Maybe it can be called control room or confusion room, which ever suits a person. Of course, anyone, who doesn’t know how to deal with it, creates problems with his/her behavior, not just for him/herself but for others as well. So, spending some time trying to understand how our minds work can be useful.

    Very useful tips!

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Priyanka,

Welcome to the blog. I’m glad you like the post.

Thanks for your suggestion, and I too were seriously thinking to tweet some special lines from my posts.

Nice to know your views about mind. I guess if you treat it as a part of your body then it would help, as you’d be more careful with it and take utmost care else you know you’ll lose it and suffer.

Whatever you call the mind, it has been proved by people that it is powerful if you use it correctly. Else, as you suggest, it becomes a problem.

And, this is what most of us overlook – understanding our mind and try to leverage its power. I veto your suggestion for all of us to spend some time on this aspect. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and for your contribution. See you around. 🙂

P.S. It’d be nice if you can grab for yourself a gravatar so we can all see with whom we’re interacting. 🙂

  33. I like how you said that mind is unstable in nature. It’s very true and what we put in our minds is very important. Whether we “think” is not that bad, or negative, our minds pick up on these things and your subconscious acts on them. It doesn’t know the difference between right or wrong, just obeys commands given.

Being yourself and never “losing your mind” is very important. Most experience this because, most do not believe in themselves and they don’t think positive. I think if they are more realistic in terms of what they have to deal with, the expectations are more manageable.

As always, enjoyed this article. Thanks Harlenna!

    1. Hi Nate,

I’m glad you enjoyed the article.

Well, the stability of mind might range from few micro seconds to minutes and hours. It all depends on how much control we’ve over it and how much we practice to make it stable. It is obvious that the more stable your mind is, the more use you can make out of it.

You’re absolutely right that mind would not know what is right or wrong unless you train it in that respect. Your “self” has to be stronger than your “mind”, and for that you need to go for all aspects of personal development.

Mind is notorious for creating unreasonable expectations and desires. And if you fall in for those, you end up suffering from the commotion that follows.

Thanks for stopping by and continuing the discussion by sharing your valuable thoughts and views. I really appreciate it. 🙂

  34. What an interesting “mind-enhancing” blog Harleena!

You really got me thinking. My Mom lost her mind toward the end of her life and its interesting because I watched her slowly lose interest in life. She became more and more self absorbed and less interested in anyone outside of herself. It made me wonder if losing your mind simply means you stop engaging your mind here. Perhaps she was engaging her mind somewhere else and it just looked to us like she was losing her mind. Very interesting. If I could have climbed in her head maybe I’d know, but for now I can only hypothesize! 🙂

Thanks for getting me thinking. xo

    1. Hi Karen,

I’m glad you found the post as interesting.

I’m sorry about your mother, but you really have an interesting observation here. It is said that you should keep your mind engaged, especially in the old age. Recent scientific reports on Alzheimer’s too concur with the same.

But as you suggest, merely not engaging your mind outside of yourself may not really mean going insane or losing your mind. In fact, spirituality encourages you to do that to discover and know yourself. You’re right that inward engagement of mind can be taken in the wrong sense in some cases.

However, you can always see some signs and symptoms of losing mind, which would be very obvious. The person would be very disorganized and disorientated, for one. For eg. you cannot call an introvert or autistic person to have lost the mind.

Thanks for initiating this interesting discussion and adding value to the post. I really appreciate your visit. 🙂

  35. “Do you think you can ever lose your mind?”

Well, I don’t know about losing it.. but I don’t feel sharp sometimes when I’m terribly overwhelmed. Which is one reason I strive for simplicity in my life.

We are definitely responsible for what we allow into our minds, that’s for sure.

    darlene 🙂

    1. Hi Darlene,

I think I’ll reframe this question. 😉 I didn’t want you to think about losing your mind, but I just wanted to highlight how important it is to control our mind.

We do use the terms “sharp mind” to express the qualities of focus, alertness, and fast processing of the mental mechanisms. As per your experiences, your mind does get affected when you do not feel good. And, you adopt simplicity to overcome the disturbances in your life in order to gain control over your mind, and feel sharp again. That’s a nice way to be.

I totally agree that to a large extent we’re ourselves responsible for our mental states.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your personal experiences and thoughts. I appreciate it. 🙂

      1. LOL.. it is funny how our minds see and interpret differently.

OK, so more “sharp” rather than “losing it”..

I noticed the other day as I was helping my daughter (I’m training her to work as a WordPress assistant)..that we were trying to do something I rarely have to do. It was with Google Analytics (arghhh!!) and the more we read, the more confused we got.

My mind literally started shutting down. I mean my vision even got a little hazy. Sounds crazy but that’s how bad it was.

Now you see why simplicity is a priority for me. 🙂

I try and keep it simple and once I’ve figured out a process, I like to create a system to refer back to. Less strain on my brain. haha

        darlene

        1. Sometimes it’s the communication that makes the difference and not really the interpretation by the mind.

I understand that it feels better to walk around the familiar grounds rather than traversing the unknown frontiers. You seem to be very methodical, and that’s a trait of a good mind. 🙂

          Thanks for your views.
